Rumor Has It That Free Radical Has Shut Its Doors

free radical design

According to many different sources speaking to GamesIndustry.biz this morning, it is being reported that Free Radical Design has closed down and an unknown number of staff and senior executives have left already. One staff member even went so far as to tell GI.biz that when they showed up for work the doors were locked and a note on the door told them to go to a nearby hotel for a meeting. Why did that make me giggle a little? Sorry, being gutter minded here.

While it is indeed sad news to hear of another gaming studio shutting its doors, where does this leave the “unnamed” LucasArts project they have been quietly working on despite the deal with LucasArts going down the toilet back in October? Supposedly, the game has been sent to Rebellion to be worked on instead, the game was Star Wars Battlefront III. If that is the case, it is a good move because Rebellion, as you all know, were the masterminds behind the very popular Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. However, that is still rumor at this point like I said, so just keep your shirts on.

You may recall that during the past few months, stirrings around the internet have claimed that trouble had been brewing at Free Radical for quite some time, with even the assumption that many changes and lay-offs were to happen at any day thanks to the parting of ways with LucasArts and the flop known as Haze. All of this was subsequently denied by the company’s director Steve Ellis, who like most higher-ups dismissed the accusations as false:

“Nothing unusual is happening here. Projects end. New projects start. That’s how things have worked for nearly 10 years. TimeSplitters 4 and an unnamed project are both still in development [along with] other unannounced projects, which are in the process of being signed. We certainly won’t be laying off any staff today. Or, for that matter, any time in 2008. If something happens in 2009 I’m sure we’ll be prepared to comment – but from where I’m sitting, whatever happens is far more likely to be positive than negative.”

As of this post, all calls to the Free Radical offices were yet to be returned and no word on whether or not we can expect an official announcement or press release soon has been divulged either. But, Edge apparently has some inside information on what went down during the hotel meeting. You can view that after the break.

dreidelr2d2 1 Lips Holiday Music Has a Dreidel (It Made It Out of Clay)Microsoft is getting into the holiday spirit in the most traditional of ways: breaking out the Christmas/Hanukkah goodies and selling them off. Today, you’ll be able to download three new songs for Lips that will allow you to re-enact your dreams of being a Christmas crooner from the 50’s. First up is Andy Williams’ version of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” a song you are guaranteed to hear in every other store you enter from now until December 25th. Next up is Elvis’ “Blue Christmas,” which you are legally obliged to sing only while wearing sparkling white spandex. Finally there’s “The Dreidel Song” as performed by Sister Hazel, which always makes me think of Arnold Schwarzeneggar for some reason.

Jimi Hendrix’s Likeness and Music Appearing in Guitar Hero: World Tour

hendrix1 Jimi Hendrixs Likeness and Music Appearing in Guitar Hero: World Tour

Activision has announced that the late, great Jimi Hendrix will be appearing in the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour. Yes, it looks like rather than just ripping off his image through the character of Xavier Stone, they’ve decided to just bite the bullet and put Hendrix himself in the game. Along with the famed guitarist, the game will contain two of Hendrix’s most famous tracks: “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” More tracks will be released as DLC later on.

“Guitar Hero games have become the virtual rock stage for the industry’s most beloved artists and Guitar Hero World Tour continues that tradition by honoring the great Jimi Hendrix and celebrating some of his greatest work,” said Tim Riley, Vice President of Music Affairs for Activision Blizzard. “His presence in the game will serve to satisfy multiple generations of his fans and Guitar Hero devotees, as well as create new fans by reintroducing his genre-defining guitar style through the unique Guitar Hero experience.”

Meanwhile, Rock Band 2 is still looking ten times better, while Rock Revolution continues to beg the big boys to let him inside from out in the cold.

PlayStation Store 6/26: Not Much Going On Edition

top spin 3 PlayStation Store 6/26: Not Much Going On Edition

There’s simultaneous a lot and not very much on the PlayStation Store this week. There’s a new character for PAIN, the painful “I am Murloc” World of Warcraft single for Guitar Hero III, two demos, and all sorts of other stuff. And yet it doesn’t feel particularly substantial, but perhaps I’ve simply become spoiled in a world of multiple downloadable game releases on Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console and WiiWare every week. (Of course, you could make the argument that there’s more garbage released on those platforms, but that’s besides the point.)

Rock Band gets a crapton of Weezer and Pixies songs, including a full album from the latter group. As usual, the music is very hit-or-miss, as you like their music or you don’t. Likewise, if you don’t like sports, you probably won’t care for the pair of demos — Hot Shots Golf and Top Spin 3.

Hit the break for a look at the full list of content.

Channel Flip Reviews HAZE

Well we’ve already seen exactly what Yahtzee thought of Haze earlier this week in Zero Punctuation, but I thought it might be interesting to show everyone another review just to drive the points home. Katharine over at Channel Flip has posted her video review of the much abused PS3 title. While she’s not as funny and biting as Yahtzee she makes some of the same points about missed opportunities and poor implementation.

Overall its a better balanced review since she’s not looking to make people laugh, just to examine the game and its execution.

Zero Punctuation Shoots Up Some Haze

By Jonathan on Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 at 12:06 PM
In Game Companies, Game Consoles, Games, Sony, Ubisoft, Videos

Haze is one of those games that was incredibly hyped up, and then wasn’t so well-received by critics or consumers. So you can probably imagine how Yahtzee Croshaw feels about it. In this week’s Zero Punctuation review, he tears into the drug-fueled shooter with all the hilarity we’ve come to expect from the man. I could describe his thoughts on it in more detail, but it’s probably better if you just hear from him yourself. Enjoy.
