Viking: Battle for Asgard Developer: Creative Assembly Publisher: SEGA Price: $59.99 Platform: PS3, Xbox 360 Category: Action/Adventure ESRB: “M” for Mature Release Date: March 25, 2008
I have always been enthralled with Nordic legends, and anything Viking related. Far be it to call myself a Nordiphile, I am hardly that – I just like mythology of all sorts. I have also thought that Vikings were too often ignored in video games, and I have never understood why they have been largely shunned by the industry, This is why I was so excited about Beowulf until it was announced that it would be a movie tie-in – and in my opinion, both sucked equally.
When Viking: Battle for Asgardwas announced a few moths after Beowulf, my love of Nordic mythology took a back seat to the wariness in my brain. I decided it would be rented instead of purchased and while the waiting list for the game was long at my local Blockbuster – I am glad I waited. Whether Viking: Battle for Asgard was worth the wait or not is open to interpretation. On the one hand, I liked the visuals and some of the executions you could pull off, but the game had so many things wrong with it. It was repetitive, contained shallow swordplay, choppy framerates galore and so many other things wrong with it that by the time I was a quarter of the way finished with the game, I wanted my rental fee back. Of course, Blockbuster does not give refunds for unsatisfactory rental purchases.
In Viking: Battle for Asgard, you are Skarin – a warrior on the edge of death who is brought back from the brink by the Goddess Freya. In exchange for this life saving turn of events, you must do her bidding – and no, there are no sexual undertones to this despite the fact that she is a hottie. Her desire for you is only for you to prevent Hel, the Goddess of the Underworld from taking over Midgard. The plotline gives you the impression that the game would be full of hack and slash potential, and that is indeed true. The game was oozing with potential, and when playing I kept waiting for the goods to come to fruition but, alas, they never surfaced – probably because none were present to being with.
Sometimes, I find some really interesting lots for sale on eBay. Doing a little searching today, I came across a lot of 400 video games for $3,199.99 + Shipping (US $250, Canada $400). That works out to about $8.62 per game if you have it shipped to the United States. Keep in mind that a majority of the games are for the PS2 and original Xbox. I’m not sure what a collection like this would cost you at a store like GameStop for example, but I think the price would actually be pretty close. I wouldn’t classify this as a great deal, but it would be sweet to have all these games in your collection. If the price were closer to say $2,000 for all 400, I’d consider buying it myself.

Vikings are cool, very cool, and if like me you have been burned by games promising to give you a true taste of really cool Nordic action in the past *cough Beowulf cough*, then Viking: Battle for Asgard might just be the answer to our prayers. Today, SEGA sent us the official box art for the game, and it is pretty tasty.
Ok, so the screens for the game look great, the trailers look cool and the box art is pretty sexy – hopefully all of this plus some really engrossing gameplay will make Viking: Battle for Asgard everything Beowulf wasn’t for those of us obsessed with Norse mythology and the great bloody battles fought in the name of Odin. We have been feeding you details on this game for a few months now, but just in case you have been asleep or otherwise unavailable, I will give you a bit of a background.
As Skarin, a rage-fueled Viking hero, players will wage all-out war to free mankind from the grip of evil and ultimate annihilation. Enemies will suffer graphic dismemberment with disturbing realism from an array of Skarin’s melee, range and magic attacks. Upgradable combat skills and Skarin’s otherworldly abilities create an ever-changing landscape of epic violence and heroic victory.
Viking: Battle for Asgard is rated M for Mature and will be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360 this March. For more information on this promising title, check out our previous posts which delve deeper into Skarin’s tale and have links to all kinds of cool assets for the game. The PS3 box art is posted after the break.
Play Digital has a scathing video review of the Beowulf game up. After the dreadful intro, the graphics of the game look pretty good, leading the player to hope they were wrong about Beowulf, but then “it pretty much turns to s—” as Katherine your video host says. From button mashing boss combat to rhythm games where the video and the audio don’t quite mesh, the Beowulf game misses the mark of a good action game. At least the video review is entertaining.

Earlier today, I was watching the latest video for Beowulf called “Montsers Within”, and it made me realize something – the game is going to be so much better than the cheesy 3D movie. Granted, the more that Ubisoft has shown us of the game, the more trepid I have become, but regardless of whether the game is a steaming pile of elephant dung or not, it will be better than the movie. Of course, I could be wrong – but from what I have seen during the previews during every single commercial break on every cable channel I watch – the special effects in the movie hearken me back to a movie from the 80’s called “Clash of the Titans”. Plastic, fake, and oh so Mystery Science Theater 3000.
Ok, back to the trailer. From giant sea serpents, to wicked trolls to the infamous Grendel himself, the new trailer gives you more monster goodness then you can shake a severed arm at. Yes, there are tons of monsters in this game, and it looks like some of them are just a bit too big for Beowulf to subdue all by his lonesome – but this is where having a horde of warriors at your beck and call will come in handy. A couple of female monsters latch on to our Nordic hero at one point in the trailer, and while it looks like they are just feeling a bit randy – they are more than likely trying to suck the life force from him. Apparently not in the mood for some free lovin’, Beowulf slings the golden female beasts from him and kills them before they can jump back up and try again. Reminds me of something my ex-boyfriend once said, well.. never mind, this is not the appropriate venue for sharing a pseudo-intellectual’s attempt at humor that is nothing more than verbal pestilence.
With the new trailer, Ubisoft has also announced the Xbox 360 achievements that you can unlock during gameplay. So, for all of the gamers out there who are obsessed with jacking up their gamer scores, you will find the list of achievements more interesting than most. I have listed these wonderous accomplishments after the break. In the meantime, if you want to watch the trailer you have to click this link. The game is rated “M” and we must comply with regulations and force you through an age gate, or else we will face the wrath of the ESRB – and trust me, the last thing we want to do is piss them off. Beowulf is in stores now for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 – the PSP version will arrive on December 4th.
The new Beowulf game should be hitting store shelves tomorrow, and now there’s a new launch trailer up for it. It basically shows the title hero ripping apart monster with his bare hands, yelling at the top of his lungs, and…getting it on with some glowing yellow girl. Weird. The game looks like a rip-off of God of War, which could be a good thing if done right. Guess we’ll just have to see.
Ray Winstone, the voice behind Beowulf in the upcoming film, has also lent his voice talents to the video game as well. This video shows him working in the sound studio recording some chilling lines for the epic hero. From the looks of things, he’s doing a good job delivering some lines that I’m sure people will be quoting after the film comes out. And until I saw this video, I didn’t realize exactly who Ray Winstone was. I just always remembered him as “that guy in Sexy Beast and The Departed” (he was the gangster who made fun of Leonardo DiCaprio for drinking cranberry juice).
SEGA and Creative Assembly has delivered to us the first trailer from their latest game in development, Viking: Battle for Asgard. As Skarin, the powerful yet flawed warrior, the gamer will take part in battles, fight magical beasts and barbaric warriors, and try to stop Ragnarok – the apocalyptic battle that could destroy everything. In the new trailer, you get to see Skarin battle his enemies in a blood filled rage. So far, between the small amounts of gameplay and cut scenes, the game is looking rather cool. The army of monsters headed Skarin’s way in the beginning of the trailer reminded me a bit of Skeletor on steroids, and the huge beast at the end of the trailer – well, lets just say that if I was Skarin, I would have wet myself.
With Beowulf and now Viking: Battle for Asgard, it looks like Nordic barbarians and warriors are getting the much needed love they deserve from the gaming companies – of course, this is just a mythology fan talking here. Anyway, if you want to watch the trailer, you have to go through an age gate first because the game as yet to receive a rating from the gaming world’s overlords the ESRB.
Look for Viking: Battle for Asgard to be in stores for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in Spring 2008. In the meantime, check back with us often for updates and more cool assets from the game.
I’ve been looking forward to next week’s PlayStation Store update, which will feature a demo of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, and was taken by surprise when I saw how great this week’s update is. While the TimeShift demo is old news to anyone who has played it already on Xbox 360 or PC (and undoubtedly regretted it), Need for Speed ProStreet is definitely worth a look given the change in direction for the series.
While there’s only a single PSone game this week, it’s a real classic – arguably what is the best Twisted Metal of them all (if you remove Black from the conversation, it’s a no-contest), Twisted Metal 2, is now available for $5.99.
And just to grind my gears, there’s a bunch of downloadable cheats (which cost money, of course) for The Godfather.
It’s quite a long list between all of those cheats and videos, so you’ll have to hit the jump to see the full list.
