With 50 titles released in the series, Resident Evil clocks in as the best selling series in Capcom’s history, with 34.5 million copies sold. That’s followed by Mega Man with 120(!) titles selling 28 million copies, and Street Fighter rounding out the top three with 25 million.

These numbers come from the Japanese publisher a month prior to the company’s 25th anniversary, which it will celebrate next month. They revealed the sales for the 14 Capcom series which have gone platinum, as well as the 46 individual games which have gone platinum for the company.

Here’s a look at the top of the list; you can find the rest at Next-Gen.

monster hunterMore good news for Capcom.

Thanks to Monster Hunter Freedom 2G shipping over one million units in Japan in just six days of sale, these new numbers have help push the franchise to an impressive 6.3 million units sold worldwide.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2G for the PSP was released in Japan on March 27, along with special edition Slim & Lite PSP bundles also available and Capcom has stated that because of this, the company will continue to support the franchise with multiple format releases.

A spokesperson from Capcom commented:

“As always, we at Capcom will continue to strive to develop new and original games that appeal to a broad audience around the world while expanding our properties for multiple platforms. We believe that by bringing the Monster Hunter series to multiple platforms, it will help the franchise reach an even greater number of users eager for its unique gameplay.”

Personally, I have never played one of these games, but with Monster Hunter 3 being a Wii exclusive – I might just have to try it out. If only just to justify still owning a Wii.

top50 Nintendo Tops the First “Top 50 Developers” ListAn exhaustive report – combining factors like game sales, Metacritic averages and developer feedback through Gamasutra – has concluded creating the first-ever Top 50 Developers list from Game Developer magazine. Coming in at the top of the list is, but of course, Nintendo’s Kyoto studio, followed by Infinity Ward, Blizzard, EA Canada, and Valve.

The top 20 are as follows, along with some of their notable 2007 releases:

  1. Nintendo Kyoto (Brain Age, Wii Play)
  2. Infinity Ward (Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)
  3. Blizzard Entertainment (World Of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade)
  4. Electronic Arts Canada (FIFA Soccer 08, NBA Street: Homecourt)
  5. Valve (Portal, Team Fortress 2)
  6. Konami Japan Studio (Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer, Dance Dance Revolution Universe)
  7. Insomniac Games (Ratchet & Clank Future)
  8. Capcom Osaka Studio (Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, Monster Hunter Freedom)
  9. Electronic Arts Tiburon (Madden NFL 08, NASCAR 08)
  10. BioWare Edmonton (Mass Effect, Jade Empire: Special Edition)
  11. Bungie Studios (Halo 3)
  12. Ubisoft Montreal (Assassin’s Creed, Naruto: Rise Of A Ninja)
  13. 2K Boston [& Australia] (BioShock)
  14. Harmonix (Rock Band)
  15. Bandai Namco Tokyo (Ace Combat 6: Fires Of Liberation, Beautiful Katamari)
  16. Square Enix Tokyo (Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, Front Mission DS)
  17. Game Freak (Pokemon Diamond/Pearl)
  18. Epic Games (Unreal Tournament 3, Gears Of War PC)
  19. Hudson Soft (Mario Party 8, Mario Party DS)
  20. Neversoft (Guitar Hero III, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground)

The full list and all of the excruciating minutiae that went into the list can be found at the Game Developer Research website, located here. It’s interesting to see how the top 50 shaped itself; in the top 20 alone I was surprised by several things (Valve not being higher and Hudson Soft being so high, for example) – what do you make of the list?

Xbox 360 Back Compat Update Brings Playboy the Mansion

the guy game Xbox 360 Back Compat Update Brings Playboy the MansionThe Xbox 360’s backwards compatibility grew a bit larger today with the November 2007 BC update, which apparently required there to be as many old sports games included as possible. It’s hard to really pinpoint any big name games, because there really aren’t (m)any. Playboy the Mansion is noteworthy because, well, it’s Playboy the Mansion.

The total number of Xbox games that are backwards compatible on the 360 is now past 300. One has to wonder if Microsoft will continue to roll out these updates with Xbox Originals set to launch next month.

To download the update, simply pop in any of the included games and boot it up while connected to Xbox Live. You’ll be prompted to download the update automatically.

Are there any remaining Xbox games you want to see added to the back compat list? It’s hard to come up with much now that Playboy, The Guy Game and Rocky have been added, but I’d still like to see The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind included in a future update. (Editor’s Note: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is already a backwards compatible title. It was added with the update back in July. Here’s the announcement.)

See the list of additions after the break.

Monster Hunter Freedom’s incredible graphics, deep gameplay and compelling multiplayer quests represent the very best that the PSP system has to offer,” said Mark Beaumont, executive vice president, officer and head of Capcom consumer software publishing in the Americas and Europe. “In Japan, we’ve seen the Monster Hunter phenomenon take off based on players coming together for face-to-face multiplayer ‘hunting parties,’ which we will foster with our own community here in North America.”

If you would like to learn more about Monster Hunter Freedom 2, head on over to Capcom’s official interactive website for game features, an encyclopedia of monsters, and other cool and informative tidbits. What I found especially amusing was the “Felyne” kitchen – which is still under construction. I am assuming these guys cook dinner for you…. I wish I could teach my cats to do something constructive like that instead of glaring at me while eating me out of house and home.

Capcom Q1 Sales Rise on the Wings of Phoenix

In Capcom, Games, Games Industry, Nintendo, Nintendo

pw4ds Capcom Q1 Sales Rise on the Wings of Phoenix Capcom has released the figures for their first quarter sales. The 31.5 percent rise of sales figures have much to do with the success of Phoenix Wright 4 for the DS and Resident Evil 4 for the Wii.

Phoenix Wright 4 DS has sold more than 500,00 copies, exceeding sales of any of the previous court room adventures.  Resident Evil 4 is also doing very well and Monster Hunter Freedom 2nd continues sales growth.

Despite the recent success, Capcom hasn’t revised its projected sales for the year due to poor performance of its arcade titles.

PS3 Robust Software Lineup Direct From Sony

A few weeks back, Sony distributed their ” SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICA PREVIEWS ROBUST SOFTWARE LINE UP FOR PLAYSTATION® PLATFORMS” . Although most of the news included is out there, I haven’t seen the full word for word document many places. The full statement in it’s entirety is listed below after the break. I think the PS3 is definitely headed for some good times in the future. Many critics have been extremely tough on the system, but only time will tell. They are obviously behind the curve right now, but I feel like the Nintendo Wii will eventually lose it’s hype and it will just be Sony and Microsoft on the field at that point.
