The Analog Gamer: Legacy

stormie The Analog Gamer: Legacy

The Star Wars SAGA RPG is officially one of my favorite games to read lining right up there next to the old West End Star Wars D6 RPG, Pinnacles’ Deadlands and Kenzer’s Aces & Eights. While I’m currently buried in fantasy mayhem in my two ongoing RPG games every new SAGA release not only entertains me and enriches my Star Wars fanboyish knowledge of the galaxy far, far away, but it also demonstrates that if I ever get the opportunity to play in a game rather than run it I’m going to insist it be Star Wars SAGA.

Every time I begin a discussion of Star Wars with a game group I seem to have the same frustrating results.. “Star Wars would be great if I didn’t already know how it ended.” Is the most common response I get.

It seems a lot of gamers have their impressions of what adventuring in Star Wars can be locked into the films they enjoyed. I’ve even had the “Star wars is a generational saga about the Skywalker family and their impact on the universe” George Lucas paraphrase thrown back a few times.

Well guess what folks, that may be true of the George Lucas story and his cinematic campaign, but this is an entire galaxy full of folks. Lots of planets to explore, many cultures to experience and lately even, thanks to Dark Horse Comics and Bioware/Obsidian lots of time to play within. I professed my love of the Knights of the Old Republic setting in a previous column, and with the reveal trailer for the upcoming Bioware Old Republic MMO making fanboys lose it, I think the resistance to playing in that setting may start waning.

Getting away from the 800lb. Gorilla in Star Wars: The Rebellion, Darth Vader and even the later Expanded Universe canon of the Yuuzhan Vong and New Republic can be a challenge.

How do you tell your own tale in a world so universally loved?

electronicentertainmentexpo 253x300 Pr E3 Blues: A Personal PerspectiveThis is the first time in 4 years that I’ve not been scrambling and hurrying to get things ready for my trip to E3. I wish I could say I was disappointed because there is the faint chance that this year E3 might be something more akin to a sane version of my first visit to the LA convention center in 2006.

However I can’t help wondering why E3 excites anyone anymore.

Able Planet New Gaming Headphones Preserve Hearing

ableplanetlogo1 Able Planet New Gaming Headphones Preserve Hearing Able Planet has come out with new game headphone sets designed to deliver optimal gaming sound without the hearing loss that can accompany it. Using the LINX AUDIO micro technology developed for people with mild to severe hearing loss, the PS500MM and TL300 headsets allow gamers to turn the volume down to safer levels without losing the rich multimedia sounds in gaming titles. According to the press release on Business Wire, listening to head phones for even five hours a week a high volumes can cause hearing loss.

“We designed this innovative new headset specifically with PC gamers in mind,” said Able Planet’s chairman and CEO Kevin Semcken. “Gamers tend to spend significant periods of time playing online games and such extended play of rich multimedia sounds puts a cumulative strain on the ears this can cause hearing loss and fatigue. Our technology minimizes this risk so that users no longer have to turn up the volume just to be able to drown out background noise.”

Both headsets come with oversized leather earpieces equipped with noise cancellation built into the microphones. The PS500MM ships with a wireless USB adaptor and two 3.5mm jacks. The TL300 headset features 2.5mm jacks for Xbox compatibility. Both headsets are due out in December. For more information or to place an order visit www.ableplanet.com.

This is looking like a great option for my wife who has a moderate hearing loss. At $99 it’s much more affordable than the LoSt-CaUzE™ Gaming Headphones ($179) and about right for a good headset.

Herod\'s Lost TombHerod\'s Lost Tomb

Looks like National Geographic is getting into the gaming business, and have launched their own gaming company, National Geographic Games (NGG), which will publish and develop games across major gaming console, handheld, online and mobile platforms. The purpose of these games is to not only extend the National Geographic Society’s mission but to also reach out to people in a different way to get them interested in caring for the planet and its inhabitants.

Working with publishers such as Namco Bandai, Sony and Merscom, their goal is to create fun, high-quality games based on National Geographic’s core themes and media properties. The team they have assembled so far includes Chris Mate, former Take2 Interactive and Bethesda Softworks executive, who will from here on out be known as vice president and general manager for NGG and will oversee and manage the group’s daily global operations.

To kick things off, NGG along with Merscom have launched their first in-house produced game, Herod’s Lost Tomb which is based upon and highlights content from the upcoming December 2008 issue of National Geographic Magazine as well as the broadcast special on the biblical figure King Herod which airs November 23. This hidden-object game takes you on an archeological dig to which promises to give you a the experience of a real-life archaeological adventure. The game features photography from National Geographic, a story following  the life and death of one of the most famous rulers of the ancient Middle East, King Herod of Judea, and consists of over one thousand objects to discover, six different environment, and five mini-games with footage, scenes and highlights from the show.

The game will be available online in a flash version for free via the National Geographic Channel and for the PC, Mac and iPhone which includes full features and high production content.

National Geographic Games Release Schedule:

November

  • National Geographic – “Herod’s Lost Tomb”
  • Namco Bandai – “National Geographic: Panda”
  • Sony – “National Geographic: Africa”

December 2008

  • National Geographic – “Sudoku Traveler: China”

2009

  • National Geographic – “Rain Forests”
  • National Geographic – “Greencity”

I wonder if my magazine and channel subscription would give me a discount? Probably not.

Free Xbox Live Cross-Platform Play Only for a Limited Time

By Chris on Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 at 1:48 PM
In Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Microsoft, Microsoft

Gaming Today

On Monday, we reported that certain Xbox 360 games were now playable online with a free Xbox Live Silver account. While that is indeed the case, 1UP has learned that this is only for a limited time, and is not a permanent change to games with cross-platform play.

A Microsoft rep told 1UP, “For a limited time, Microsoft is offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/Games for Windows titles that offer Live cross-platform play. This promotion won’t last, so we can encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can.”

The promotion is apparently part of the new free Games for Windows Live initiative, although I don’t see how this does anything but reinforce the fact that Xbox 360 owners have to still pay to play online. Is this supposed to be encouraging PC gamers to give Live another chance or something?

Some Xbox 360 Games Now Playable on Xbox Live for Free

By Chris on Monday, July 28th, 2008 at 3:30 PM
In Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Microsoft, Microsoft

Gaming TodayThe rumor over the weekend was that Xbox Live Silver members could play certain games online, starting with Shadowrun. A message was first posted on the Xbox.com forums this past Thursday but couldn’t be confirmed over the weekend thanks to a Live Weekend event that allowed everyone and anyone to play online.

Shacknews is now reporting that it has confirmed the news, and that Xbox Live Silver members can play certain 360 titles online — including Shadowrun, Universe at War, and Lost Planet: Colonies Edition. This is the first time any game has allowed you to play online on Xbox 360 without an Xbox Live Gold account, which we can likely trace back to Microsoft’s recent decision to make Games for Windows Live free.

Now the question becomes: is the ability to play the rest of the 360’s catalog of games online enough to justify $50 per year? We all know there’s almost no other benefit to being a Gold member, particularly since Microsoft seems to have abandoned its policy of stagnating DLC releases between Gold and Silver members.

Perhaps some of the features in the “new Xbox experience,” like being able to stream Netflix movies, will be made available only to Gold members. But in the meantime, selling Xbox Live Gold subscriptions might become a bit tricky.
