eve online starbase Ban Hammer Falls as EVE Online Starbase Exploit Crumbles

EVE Online players who’ve been exploiting a Starbase reactor bug may find themselves banned from EVE Online. CCP has finally brought the hammer down on the Starbase exploit and those who’ve been taking unfair advantage of it.

The bug is now fixed and over 70 exploiter user accounts are banned from the game, their Starbases destroyed, thanks to a player petition filed December 7th. CCP is still in the process of cleaning up the fall out and will be discussing the matter with the player run Council of Stellar Management this weekend. Visit EVE Online for the official CCP statement in the EVE Insider.

Pirates of the Caribbean Online Scares Up First Anniversary Celebration

tort curse Pirates of the Caribbean Online Scares Up First Anniversary Celebration

Disney is celebrating the first anniversary of Pirates of the Caribbean Online in a big way with an All Hollows’ Eve online event and contest. The event kicks off Friday October 31 as the sun sets on the Caribbean leaving it to the night. The press release warns that all people of the Caribbean should take cover inside lest the Curse of the Muertos Moon leave them enslaved to Jolly Roger.

“To help celebrate the first anniversary and “All Hallows Eve,” Jolly Roger will cast a wicked curse on the populace of the Caribbean and stir up an epic in-game event. Starting October 31, the Pirates of the Caribbean Online world will permanently turn to night, and when the moon is at its fullest, any Pirate that doesn’t take cover will become cursed and turn into an undead skeleton. Chaos will ensue, and all of the cursed Pirates will be forced to attack the towns, and one another, all in the name of Jolly Roger.”

The Curse of the Muertos Moon runs from Friday October 31st through Sunday November 2nd. If you’re eager to get in on the action or avoid it altogether the full moon will rise three times each day of the event. Look for the moon to reach its zenith Friday at 12 noon, 5 pm and 8 pm; Saturday at 12 noon, 4 pm and 9 pm; and Sunday at 1 pm, 4 pm and 7 pm Pacific Standard time. The event also brings the zombie emote into play.

A special Anniversary contest also kicks off All Hollows’ Eve. Both Basic and Unlimited access members will have a shot at winning the Grand prize:

  • Meet the Pirates Online crew and lead developer for a one-on-one Q&A and a lunch at Walt Disney Studios to see where the films are made
  • Receive a three-day trip to Disneyland and two nights stay at the Disneyland Hotel, with one night in the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite

Participants can also score a $100 shopping spree in the Pieces of Eight shop, a MacBook and an iPod. Nano

Players have until December 19 to submit a short video declaring their love for Pirates Online and explaining how they “Live the Pirates Life.”

NCsoft Canceling European MMO, Rumor: Tabula Rasa Cancellation Imminent

tabula rasa logo dark NCsoft Canceling European MMO, Rumor: Tabula Rasa Cancellation Imminent

The word from industry insiders is NCsoft is trimming its European office after scrapping the unnamed MMO it was working on. GamesIndustry.biz says about 50 positions are being cut. Funding for the MMO will be returned to the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). That’s all GBP 950,00 although it shouldn’t hurt NCsoft since it was dipped into. I wonder if NCsoft gets to keep the interest.

It’s also rumored that Tabula Rasa will be discontinued within a few months due to its lack luster performance.

The game, led by Richard Garriott enjoyed a high profile launch earlier this year, but has failed to capture the imagination of the gaming public, and one source told GamesIndustry.biz a few months ago that the company “would kill for 300,000 subscribers right now,” when comparisons were made with CCP’s Eve Online.

I’m really not surprised having Richard “General British” Garriott aboard couldn’t save Tabula Rasa. It tried to appeal to both Western and Eastern audiences and failed at both.

Jumpgate: Evolution Trailer Showcases Asteroid Gameplay

There a new video over on GameTrailers featuring Jumpgate: Evolution Asteroid Gameplay. The footage is just over two minutes of ship vs. ship combat while flying through an asteroid field.

This isn’t a fancy trailer with a thrilling soundtrack. However, it does give you a good look at the graphics upgrade and GUI for NetDevil’s MMO.

I’ve been looking forward to Jumpgate: Evolution. It’s everything I thought EVE Online was at first glance until I found out about all the corporate politics.

Wow Characters and Other Online Game Avatars Now Have Their Own “Facebook”

2246610413 41b9abd520 Wow Characters and Other Online Game Avatars Now Have Their Own FacebookAvatars United, a community for game avatars of all worlds has just been launched. Anybody with a virtual alter ego is free to join but remember, real life identities are not allowed.

Built by a group of Swedish childhood friends (Enemy Unknown AB), designed as a service they themselves would have used, Avatars United now provides a Facebook alternative for virtual world friendships with extra functionality that includes WoW Armory support.

Already up and running with thousands of beta testers the site allows you to register your avatar(s) and to communicate with people active in all online game worlds.

“If one of your friends would say take a break from WoW to discover AoC, Avatars United would help you keep track of him/her and share of all of his/her new adventures. As your friend would still keep his/her WoW profile registered anyone wanting to track him/her down would find it easy doing so.”

“A great deal of the people you regularly communicate within WoW you actually know very little about in real life and therefore have great difficulties tracking. Avatars United offers a centralized social platform for all people you know who share your passion for immersive online worlds.” said Thor Olof Philogène, of Enemy Unknown AB

The beta which launched in Sweden during March and April is still going on but you can still sign up, and so far thousands of visitors check it out on a weekly basis. The most populated worlds at present are unsurprisingly World of Warcraft, Eve Online, and Second Life.

I myself have already signed up, but I refuse to tell you who my character is – I am nothing if not a person who plays by the rules.

To check it out or to sign up, click here.
