virus Seagate Hard Drives Shipping with Virus, Free of Charge

If you’ve picked up a Seagate hard drive recently, pay attention – your shiny new hard drive might have come with a nice virus. While the company is saying it’s only a “small number” of drives that are plagued with the virus, I’d still be very wary if I were a potential victim.

According to Techworld.com, the drives which might be infected are Seagate’s Maxtor Basics, and the virus is the Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah. What it does it searches your computer for passwords to online games and then sends them to a server in China.

Seagate is offering anti-virus software through its website which will be able to remove the virus, and customers can contact Seagate to determine whether or not their drive is infected.

World of Warcraft is one of the game’s susceptible to having passwords stolen, and as a victim of losing a Diablo 2 account, I can say from personal experience that losing your account to hackers flat-out sucks. So be careful out there; we wouldn’t want all that time spent fishing in WoW to go to waste.

Anyone able to find ANY mention of this on Seagate’s website?

That’s nothing compared to Seagates lack of warranty support. I returned a ext. 650gb HD with a RMA# assigned after it failed within 6 months of purchase. They did nothing except sent it back to with no explanation! Now that’s capitolism run amuck. These corporations have gotten lazy and way too greedy, DON’T BUY SEAGATES they’re not only infested with foriegn bugs the company won’t even honor they’re Warranties. I should’ve stuck my head up the cows ass on this warranty???
