"Phil, what you fail to realize is that when our politicians fail to competently manage our collective time and energy, a different focus is needed."

I don't fail to realize that, and you'd see that if you actually read what I wrote. I don't support the appeal of this law because California will be throwing away money on legal fees which will end up in the hands of the ESA.

"It may not take a village to raise a child, but it certainly does take a government to keep some children from running amuck."

I couldn't agree more. Once again, take the resources and energy we are spending on this bill and put it directly into after school programs and other educational needs. This failed attempt at regulation is just going to fail again.

I don't know if you've noticed every single other failed attempt around the country in a dozen other states for this same bill?

“We protect our children from buying inappropriate movies and ought to be able to protect them from buying inappropriate video games as well.”

Arnie, what you fail to realize is that no law "protects our children from buying inappropriate movies" aside from pornographic ones. The movie rating system is entirely voluntary and carries no weight of law just like the ESRB ratings.

"You are aware that children have parents, right?"

Andy, what you fail to realize is that not all children have parents who closely monitor their behavior and actions. Nor are all parents always able to prevent their children from performing unwise or illegal actions. That is why there must be government oversight and supervision to pick up the slack when parents fail or can't be there for their children. It may not take a village to raise a child, but it certainly does take a goverment to keep some children from running amuck. While that does not necessitate the need for a law regulating the sale of video games to minors because the threat to society and children from video games is unproven, the notion that a parent is the only supervision every child needs is ludicrous.
