SCEE CEO Says There Is No PSP Phone Planned

Rotary PhoneDavid Reeves, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has laid the rumor of a PSP phone to rest.

The rumor began when news surfaced that Sony had applied for a patent that included a movable screen that swiveled 90 degrees into widescreen mode, and a button layout similar to that of the PSP. The language of the patent fueled the rumor, saying that the technology will be used, “especially that for performing entertainment functions represented by gaming function.”

Apparently, there’s nothing to the rumor. In an exclusive interview with MCV, Reeves said, “I know the head of Sony Ericsson very well. He has a Walkman phone and a Cybershot phone available, but I know nothing about a PSP phone. I haven’t heard anything about it at all – and I would know. They wouldn’t develop it without our knowledge.”

What a letdown! I had actually entertained thoughts of picking up a PSP phone to further consolidate the number of electronic devices I travel with. Oh well, back to the rotary phone.

I don’t know. Corporations often deny projects though. Apple initially denied the existence of an iPhone project.
