Rumors of a Blu-Ray Drive for the Xbox 360 Are Greatly Exaggerated, Says Microsoft

One of the bigger pieces of gaming news sweeping the internet over the weekend was a report stating that a technology manufacturer had received orders from Microsoft to construct Xbox 360’s with built-in Blu-Ray drives. Well, now Microsoft has stepped in to temper the rumors, stating once again that they don’t have any such project in the works:
“As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360. Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available.”
Whoa, whoa, back up there, MS. What happened to all that talk about turning the Xbox 360 into one all-encompassing media center? If you’re all about the games, then why is there a collection of TV shows and movies on Xbox Live that rivals my local Blockbuster? And, er, I think the growing sales of the PS3 compared with dwindling sales of stand-alone Blu-Ray players might have something to say about that “games are why people buy gaming consoles” talk.

Yea dude, blu-ray is becoming more popular now. Especially with tons of people buying new HDTV’s and what not. Who knows, maybe PS3 will pass the 360 in sales, if they ever get some decent games… (MGS4, RE5, to name a few)
HD-DVD is dead, it’s gone, old news. I don’t see the 360 surviving without some sort of BRD support.

If you fanboys weren’t so blinded by your unflinching love for Sony you may have realized a long time ago. Most people dont buy video game consoles for the HD capabilitiess, the size of the hard-drive, or even the types of media it plays. Most people buy videogame consoles to play videogames (whether online or offline). And when it comes to which consoles has the best and most innovative game library, xbox 360 is still leaps and bounds ahead of PS3.
i knew the xbox 360 wouldn’t have blu-ray that’s why i put off not buying a PS3 when i can have more fun on the xbox 360 now as for the blu-ray im gonna wait a few months till they get down in price so i can buy one for my computer

Its catching it rapidly. There is only a 6m gap now between them and the PS3 has outsold the 360 every week worldwide this year. At its current rate the PS3 will overtake the 360 in total sales by mid 2009 but the launch of its games (which are all still to come) will obviously increase sales.

Did he just say that? seriously? Compared to Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft pales in comparison to just how many “games” they actually make. Third party devs don’t count with a statement like that. Seems like he’s trying to take credit for all of those dev’s hard work.
Oh and the issue: Ya, the box will have a blu ray player at some point, we all know that.
The upshot is, Microsoft will never admit that HD-DVD failed and therefore admit that blu-ray has indeed helped PS3 sales. That’s business, but the fact is it has…they’re trying to put the best face on it they can and basically deny what we already know.

I think that MS are starting to get slightly twitchy about the progress of 360. In the USA the xbox will always do well but in Europe and Japan, not a chance. The RRoD problem left scars in Europe and i believe that has affected the sales here. Me and nearly all my friends had 360’s until mine and most of my mates consoles packed up in a few months. We now all own ps3’s instead and enjoy the games and psn for free! MS messed up releasing the 360 early and they will pay for it in the long run.
