Rumor Of The Day: Blu-Ray Enabled Nintendo Wii (False)
By William on Saturday, July 28th, 2007 at 12:02 AM PST In Nintendo, Nintendo

Update: As I suspected, this story turned out to be completely false, but I still think Nintendo should consider some upgrades in the future.
No one really knows if this is a legitimate rumor or not. Much of game reporting is based on anonymous tips and we just have to go with our instincts. I was bashed hard in Digg comments the other day for my mention that Nintendo should probably go to a multi-tier system approach to try and tap into an even greater market. Nintendo does have some secrets up their sleeves and we expect some big announcements from them in the next couple of months. Say what you want, but if they were to announce a Blu-Ray enabled Wii system, I am almost positive it would sell like hotcakes.
An unsuspecting informant accidentally stumbled upon a Blu-ray enabled Wii while visiting Nintendo’s R&D facility. Apparently the bathroom wasn’t that easy to find.
While searching for the bathroom, the unnamed informant took a wrong turn Willy Wonka style and opened the wrong door. Upon entering the room, he noticed a small group of Nintendo employees (engineers?) watching a movie on what looked like a Nintendo Wii. The informant recounted the details to the Sarcastic Gamer, but made it unclear if the movie playing abilites were a hardware add-on, a software upgrade, or a brand new Wii model. Regardless, he took several mental notes about the situation:
* The remote control to control movie playback attached itself to the Wii-mote nunchuck style.
* The drive slot glowed blue while the disc was in but faded to black when the disc was removed
* The Nintendo employees quickly ejected the disc and placed it in what was undeniably a Blu-ray disc case
* There was an extra Wii channel titled “Wii Watch” emblazoned with a Blu-ray logoThis discovery comes after Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime hinted at an upcoming surprise for the Nintendo Wii during a Gamehead interview. “The surprise is coming,” he teased, “by the end of September.”

Smells like mianus
If it’s going to be anything, sounds rather like an extension. The idea isn’t totally un-realistic; granted Sony and Nintendo are rivals, it’s possible as Sony would get revenue from the Wii’s Blu-Ray attachments’…but I think now, that is far-fethced.
I thought Mianus was a river? Does it smell bad? Is it polluted? That’s so sad.
It probably should be avoided. Much like this story. just because you happen upon a pile bullsh*t, doesn’t mean you should pick it up. Nor should you try to get others to smell it. BAD WILLIAM! NO! NO! NO! THAT’S ICKY! PUT IT DOWN THIS INSTANT! BAD(and I use this word as loosely as language allows)JOURNALIST!
I found another Web Site reporting that.. this rumor is 100% false.

“Say what you want, but if they were to announce a Blu-Ray enabled Wii system, I am almost positive it would sell like hotcakes”
Sell like hotcakes? you mean, like the Wii?
1st, The Wii doesn’t need that to sell more (Nintendo can barely keep systems on store shelves) and 2nd, the story was proven false already.
that’s why I listed it as a rumor
Besides, it’s funny to see just what rumours you get…in fact.
You know, I heard recently that there was a project for he Xbox 360 Elite’s to swap to Red-ray, a better version of Blu-ray, enhancing the data input on the disc allowing for better use of space. Of course, the topic never got out, but that’s what I heard.
Hey, you never know, right
Could make anything up in the market at this time and someone is bound to believe you, honestly, rather shocking.
(And yes, I took the whole Red-ray thing from Red Vs. Blue…though HHDDVVDDBVD probably would’ve been funnier).
Aren’t BVD’s just underpants ???
Umm, dosen’t the Wiikey chip let you play DVDs?
@Joelteon7
Is Nintendo and Sony rival? the answer is Yes/no. Some time they work with each other and other time they are not but they both don’t like M$. Big N reviewed they will release DVD version wii but what if they decide Blu-Ray which can play DVD, CD and blu-Ray.
William, this article needs to be marked as false. A rumor is something that still has potential to be true. This story never had any to begin with. It was written as a joke by SarcasticGamer, and you are describing it here like it just might be real. It makes the site here look kind of bad.
^^^ Buzz is right. This was not a rumor. It was a joke made by another site and you guys got punked.
Instead of trying to save face by pointing out the rumor thing, just place a big arse FALSE next to the heading.
I wouldn’t say we were punked. I thought I made it clear that the story was not probable. I did update it as false.
This is not a rumor anymore. There’s now a modchip that lets you play Blu-Ray DVD’s through the disk channel.
…but, modchips suck…
