According to engadget, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on will have a price reduction to $49.99 in the near future. I’m not so sure if even $49.99 is a good deal or not, considering it will be a paper weight down the road. If it still comes with the 5 free movies, then it would be a steal. There still is a decent library of titles for HD DVD but you have to consider the fact that an HD DVD player will be next to impossible to replace in the distant future, possibly leaving you with a pile of movies you can’t watch anymore.

Nevertheless, reports are already circulating that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 add-on drive could sink to $49.99 in the not-too-distant future, which may actually make it worth grabbing for the very respectable library of HD DVD titles already out there.

It won’t be a paperweight in the near future! It’s far too large for that. It’d make a better doorstop.

  2. Iku Tri says:

The title in the side bar said .99…..

Is this on the dollar menu?

  3. William says:

I took out the $ symbol from the title… for some reason WordPress was causing the 49 to not show with the $ symbol in there.

ok it;s not just me but the HD drive plays dvd’s too doesn’t it. so you could pitch your dvd player for a hd dvd player, play both formats. the dvd was the leading format for years so there is thousands of titles and i’m sure you own at least 30. so get it’s worth 50 bucks

    @ jimmy
    That makes good sense actually.

  6. Ivan_PSP says:

Even at that price people won’t buy it is useless, Blu-ray Disc is the only choice for movies.

  7. carg0 says:

    does the add-on upscale regular DVD’s to 1080i ??

  8. License to ill says:

    No thanks I already own a PS3.

You can keep that dead format…

    @Jimmy

The xbox 360 already has an upscaling-DVD player built in, all this drive does is add HD-DVD.

If you want a neat looking external dvd player drive for your computer, this is the route to go.

I would still purchase the hd-dvd add on for $50, even though hd-dvd is dead you can still use it as an upscaling dvd player. The 360 will only do 480p by itself, and the add on will allow you to watch you dvds in 720p/1080i. And how much do regular dvd upscalers cost?…around $100, so the choice would be an easy one for me

  12. William says:

I dunno.. for 50 bucks it’s not a bad deal, but I wouldn’t load up on movies to watch on it or anything… the problem is going to be 2 years from now when the drive stops working and replacements are nearly impossible to find.
