ps3 300x181 Rumor: Madden Coming With PS3 Price DropThe rumor mill is chewing on a possible price drop for the PS3 this August to kick off EA’s latest Madden game. Unnamed inside sources have indicated to Industrygamers‘ James Brightman that “industry sources indicate Sony is planning a $100 price cut on the PS3 in mid-August, just prior the launch of Madden (8/18) and the start of the back to school shopping season. This will naturally be a positive for the industry.”

Those of you holding their breath with me at the end of Sony’s E3 2009 presentation only to be disappointed shouldn’t give up on seeing a PS3 price drop this year. At least PSP fans should be getting a price break on games and just more games altogether because of the PSP development kit price break announced at the press conference.

I could be paranoid, but I suspect there may be other reasons Sony is holding firm on the price of its overly expensive gaming console.

Sony has been the one to beat in the Games Industry for over a decade. The electronics giant has had some tough times recently with the PS3 being the most expensive console out there and a bear to develop for. If Sony shaves a bit off the price, it could pay off big time.

Lately CNET, High-Def Digest, and other sources are recommending the PS3 as one of the best Blu-ray players on the market. A small voice in the back of my head keeps suggesting that’s one of the reasons why Sony isn’t overly eager to lower the price of the console since it’s already one of the least expensive Blu-ray players around. Sony wouldn’t take advantage of that despite the cost to gamers now would they…?

“One of the least expensive Blu-Ray players around”?

You know that hasn’t been true for almost a year now, right?

Best Buy has Samsung Blu-Ray players starting at $149. On BestBuy.com there are no less than 14 Blu-Ray players that come in under the $400 price of the PS3.

yeah, you can in europe too for about £225, compared to the PS3’s £295, but that said how many blu ray players can do what a PS3 can?

I don’t think Eva did know that.. since we have a PS3 and aren’t all that interested in another Blu-Ray player ;) Still.. the PS3 is a good bargain for gamers who have the setup to take advantage of Blu-Ray.

Unfortunately I’m beginning to see the point of view that Disk based media is a dying form.. with digital delivery becoming the more prevalent and convenient in many cases delivery method. So maybe Blu-Ray is not as big an issue going forward.

I’m still hoping they bring in some kind of software emulation that lets the damn PS3 play PS2 gamesso I can finally get the PS2 out of the entertainment unit and clear up some room…..it’s REALLY crowded. Go Marlins!!!!

    • Shawn says:

Unfortunately that’s not likely to happen.. Sony wants to move on.. and release big games digitally for you to buy again. It supports their current business model to abandon the BC program and focus on digital delivery of older games… its also a value proposition for them as the development money has already been made on those old titles and they can make a lot of profit with little work to convert and test them.
