Rumor: Disney Planning Tron Sequel for 2011?

For a movie with outdated graphics that came out over two decades ago, Tron has definitely managed to maintain a strong cult following. It’s probably for this reason that a release schedule from Disney apparently lists a sequel to Tron is slated for Spring in 2011. It seems the film will be done completely in CG, while still trying to bring an innovative visual style. We can only wonder how the writers will update this classic, given the vast improvements in virtual media over the years. Whatever they come up, I’d be willing to bet there’s going to be a video game tie-in.

It’s no surprise. Movies like Tron and War Games inspired a generation to pursue careers in computer technology especially in video game creation. You’d have no trouble finding video game industry professionals in their late 30’s and 40’s who were inspired or motivated by Tron to pursue their careers.
“It seems the film will be done completely in CG”
That would be a mistake. Tron’s appeal was not just its state of the art computer effects and virtual world, but its strong and appealing characters. Tron’s main protagonist, Flynn, was the ultimate good-natured, rogue computer genius, and Tron’s audience admired and in many cases wanted to be Flynn. Purely CG characters just can’t convey that real human appeal at least not to mature audiences.

I certainly hope so. Tron 2.0 was a great game, and a remake of the original concept with modern gaming technology would surely be great as well.
Phil provides excellent points. I don’t know if i want to see a sequel to Tron… This is reminiscent of when Lucas started pulling the Star Wars franchise out of the closet, which from my viewpoint gave us three mediocre to terrible movies that really only seemed to be made so that Lucasfilm ltd. could capitalize on a guaranteed cash cow.
Wow, nice comment for once there Phil.
You know what? I just thought of this with the whole Tron sequel and all, which I think is a good idea, but here is another 80’s movie that should get a sequel: The Last Starfighter…….
Moo…
I loved the Tron 2.0 game for PC and the GBA game, but the releases for 360 have been a bit lacking. I hope this is like 2.0 and does not try the “Classic” crap. I like the original, but mostly as an unlockable for GBA.
