My son`s best friend also had the 40 gig and his went in for repairs a few weeks ago as well, ( same issue).

John is that the slim? Or did you get a used 40 gig? I`m tempted to buy a slim.My husband is adamant on fixing this piece of crap.

Oh gawd I`m soooooo upset. I bought a 40gig two years ago, ( I`m lucky I`ve had it this long). But it breaks with a a few weeks before christmas. Anyhow the blueray went on it as well. It won`t play disks, or movies.I called Sony. They said, ” well we`ll send you a box for $190 and you can ship your console to us and we`ll put a new diode in for you”. I said it was a manufacture defect and they can ship me a new one.They said I was out of warranty, so too bad. What I can see from the people above me is frightening.

Weel i can speak for the ruomor dont get one. I bought one used and it worked fine for about three months then it just stopped reading disks period.

Iam on my 4th 40gig in 18 months Ive had hdd error no sound no disc read controls no pairing up freezing disc wont eject now plus they sent damaged console due to bad packaging 4 ps3s and counting but in all my 360 died once in 4 years

Same problem – PS3-80G will not recognize disc. Only 1 month after warranty expired and Sony wants $180 to fix the problem – then it only has a 90 day warranty. Sounds like a gimmick! Is there a re-call in the works or is Sony hiding something??

I don’t own a PS3, but from what I’m reading people’s PS3s are mostly messing up after the update. Maybe they should do something about that…but then again, I really don’t know.

I got a 40GB PS3 and it died it was brought in March. If there is so much problems with the 40GB, they should recall it and give an free upgrade to a 60GB or 80GB just for the inconvenience or give you a 360.

Also in Italy, there are a lot of play 3 broken. The Blu ray is always the problem.

Sony takes about 10-15 days to give you a regenerated playstation (not yours).

believe it or not people….i’ve owned mine for 3 weeks now and it works at times and others it don’t. i just finished a game and went and bought two new ones today and now the damn thing will not even read the disc, blu-ray or game. the 40 gb blows. i’m taking mine back tommorow !!!

My 40gb PS3 failed and we shipped it off 2 weeks ago, just called Sony and they only started looking at it today! and it will be another 2 weeks, fucking hopeless Sony!

No compensation either… at least Microsoft can admit their machines are rubbish and offer compensation. Remind me to buy an Xbox next time…

You are much more likely to have a failure on the 60GB console then the 40GB. The 60GB console was based off of a 90nm processor die and the 40GB is based off of the 65nm die and gets rid of an excess die (the emotion engine). The estimated power consumption is about half and keeps the same processing values, so less power is a give in to less heat.

I bought my 60gb sept 07 and it failed a week ago to read the disks,and it froze. so there you have it, the bluray reader won’t last that long i guess.

i buyed the ps3 40gb version it shipped with firmware 2.01 and i dont got any problems with it ps3 games run faster here than the 80gb version. and read all type of cd including ps1 games but no ps2 games

i have worked for sony for nearley 10 years now nd i have to be honest the failure rate is at least 65% of all 40gb consoles and 55% of all 60gb ones. should you get this problem i suggest you phone sonys helpline and they will help you get back gaming in no time. the original problem was that sony built there systems to break within the first 6 months to gain a 10% stock break back.

But the failure is in the Blu-Ray drive, and not the console, right?

Blu-Ray drives were commonly noted to fail during the earlier days, so it’s not so surprising.

im here to confirm the ps3 disease i used to work for sony and we were geting alarming numbers of returned ps3 (40gb ) due to Blue ray drive malfunctioning i believe the true percentage is much higher than anticipated probably aroun say 65 percent failure
