rock band 2 Rock Band 2 Officially Announced; DLC Will Carry Over

Great news today in the land of Rock Band. The sequel was officially announced today (who saw that coming?), but more importantly, lead designer Dan Teasdale confirmed that all of the DLC you’ve purchased in Rock Band will carry over to the sequel. That seems like an absolute no-brainer, but it’s a very important thing, and it’s good to know that things should work out exactly as they should.

When asked if Rock Band 2 would play DLC from the first game, Teasdale replied, “Yes. We’ve been developing Rock Band as a music platform from the start. All of the songs that you’ve purchased so far (and will be able to purchase in the future) are instantly playable and fully supported in Rock Band 2. We’ve even added some cool new features that let you play your DLC in different ways, which I think people will be very excited to get their hands on.”

Not only that, but Harmonix is working with both Microsoft and Sony to make it so that you’ll be able to download all future DLC and play it in both Rock Band and Rock Band 2. Teasdale said, “As far as Harmonix is concerned, there’s no difference between ‘Rock Band 1 DLC’ and ‘Rock Band 2 DLC’ – we’re just releasing awesome songs every week onto the Rock Band platform, all of which are playable by the Rock Band titles that support DLC.”

Xbox 360 owners will be getting their hands on the game first in September, with unspecified “other platforms” releasing later in the year. Original reports had the game only slated to come out on 360 and PS3, but the AP says it’s coming to PS2 and Wii, too. It’s unclear which is correct and why the 360 is getting the game earlier. This reeks of an exclusivity deal, which is fine in my book since I’ll be buying the 360 version. (But without the instruments, more than likely, since I cannot justify and/or fit more plastic instruments in my room.)
