Rise of the Argonauts – Get Your Greek On

I am sure more details and a playable version of this game will be available at E3 next month, but for now, Rise of the Argonauts looks like a very cool epic-adventure rpg for gamers. Players will take-on the role of Jason, King of Iolchis, and battle alongside the heroes of mythology- Hercules, Achilles, Atalanta and others. I was almost salivating after looking at the screenshots and watching the trailer.

“Gamers will leave their mark on ancient Greece as they engage in heart-pumping, lethal, blood-spurting combat against hordes of enemy warriors, ruthless beasts and truly formidable mythological creatures. Whether Jason is lopping off heads or cutting warriors in half with his sword or if Hercules is wrestling with giant beasts, the intense action in Rise of the Argonauts will leave players wanting for their next confrontation. ”

The gods are always present during Jason’s quests, and like most trifling Greek gods – you can please some while displeasing others. Earning a god’s favour will grant players powers within the god’s domain, but drawing a god’s wrath may cause them to inflict a torment on the heroes at the worst possible moment. Apollo, Ares, Athena, and Hermes are the main Olympians you will be dealing with, so finding the right balance when trying to please them all will be a big challenge.

Rumors are circulating that offline and online co-op multiplayer modes will be included, but like I said earlier, we will know more when E3 hits. Also, mythology buffs like myself will notice that the developers have changed Jason’s story a bit – instead of going after the Golden Fleece to thwart a plan to kill him, he needs the fleece to resurrect his slain wife. Jason’s main mode of travel through the game’s vast island system filled with shining cities, lush jungles and deep forests will of course be the Argos – and it is completely customizable and reflects your progress through the game. The boat will take on NPCS that provide upgrades and will reflect the accomplishments of every completed island.

This is going to be in my top ten list of games to play in 2008. Hopefully it will be released in the first part of ‘08, but I am sure Codemasters and Liquid Entertainment will be more than happy to divulge that information in a couple of weeks. When it finally comes out, it will be available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
