PS3 - Wii Comparison Unfair, Says Sony Rep
Posted by Ron on Sunday, June 24th, 2007 at 12:09 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Sony, Sony
In response to the landslide of criticism over the PS3, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has fired back, and revealed a few tidbits they’re planning to help them expand sales over the Christmas.
Jonathan Farger of SCEE says it’s wrong to compare the Wii to the PS3. “The one thing we have always done with the PlayStation is stick to our business strategy. We keep an eye on the competition, but it is unfair to put the Nintendo Wii and PS3 in the same category. The Wii is a sub-£200 console and does one thing pretty well. Compare that with a £400 piece of hardware that plays next-generation games, allows users to access photo files and has built-in Blu-Ray technology.” He went on to add, “Many people have said PS3 is not doing well, but in nine weeks we have sold more than one million machines in Europe, which is faster than the sell-through rate of the PS2. The PS1 and PS2 sold 115 million machines worldwide, so we are confident of the PS3’s performance in time.”
Fargher did acknowledge that the issue has been the software. He said Sony is looking to make more games available through the PlayStation online store in an effort to offset the lack of third-party titles. He also touted the end-of-year titles coming to the console. “It will be towards the end of the year when the big titles start to show what the PS3 can really do and hopefully make people feel more comfortable about the decision they made to invest in our hardware.” The titles he’s referring to include GTA IV, MGS 4, the newest Ratchet and Clank, Crash bandicoot, and Jak & Daxter.
Fargher also touted the PS3’s hardware edge, saying, “If you look at the hardware, you do get a lot for your money: as well as playing Blu-Ray, the PS3 also upscales DVDs to High Definition (HD) format, and if a gamer is lucky enough to own a PlayStation Portable (PSP, pictured, below-left) they can access their PS3 remotely using the PSP and a Wi-Fi connection.”
We all know that the PS3 has been facing lots of criticism and even ridicule for its flagging sales. However, it’s obvious that Sony isn’t giving up, and is in fact optimistic about their console. Honestly, they have reason to be. It’s a quality product, and once it gets past the summer doldrums (which always lack lots of quality game releases), I think it will surprise a lot of its critics.

Face it sony, the xbox 360 owns the PS3 in games and no-one cares about blu-ray it hardly makes a difference anyway.

Give it 2 years when u can buy the xbox360 for 50 quid because the technology is out-dated.
June 24th, 2007 at 5:20 pm
Having owned all 3 systems, I think the PS3 is the one that will last the longest, I watch Blu Ray movies (and I am not alone) and switch off to the Wii when I have friends over. It is the best of both worlds. The 360 has some good games as well, but I find it loud, and don't really care much for the HD-DVD add-on. All three systems have their good and bads, but I think the PS3 and the Wii will pass the 360 once more games comes out. Just my opinion.

Please, consoles don't get outdated that fast, PC does. Ps2 is a very old console and still doing allright even with those cheesy graphics, want graphics go to PC gaming. Xbox 360 simply has a far more superior 3D Hardware, is an incarnation of the Radeon X1900XT with the unified pipelines of the Radeon HD 2900XT, it has 48 pixel units (Like the X1900XT),and are unified to work with pixel shader or vertex shader or textures with no problems (Like the Radeon HD). The Geforce 7800GT that the PS3 has is simply outdated, having only 20 pixel pipelines, with 20 pixel shaders and 7 vertex shaders is just good enough for console gaming, and if the PS3 is not gonna be outdated in 2 years, not even the more advanced Xbox360. Bear in mind that the PS3 CPU is more powerful than the Xbox360 CPU, even though is quite hard to program while the Xbox360 is a dreaming for programmers. Is far more easy to untap the Xbox360 CPU power while it will take quite a long time to untap the PS3 CPU power. Bear in mind too that the CPU will have only impact on performance, not in graphic effects, the Xbox360 can be a bit CPU limited while the PS3 will be far more GPU bound.

unfair lol. how desperate. the ps3 is selling badly yes but making out its ok because it doesnt appeal to a large gaming audiance is a bit silly. if it does more then it should sell more. the ps3 wishes it could have wiis success and they must regret going so high end they put off all but the richest sony fan boys.
yes the ps3 can do more but that doesnt matter sony as we all are quite happy with our PC and dvd player. its like saying a jaguar gives a better ride than a ford but at the end of the day they basically do the same thing except one doesnt brake the bank and is just as fun yet more funky.
besides last time i checked the wii could view photos, email and has a very decent web browser aswell as the virtual console. thats not doing 1 thing very well for under £200, thats doing lots of things well

Ha, The guys at sony are so stuipd. They tell you that you should not compare their console to the wii because it is in a sub category, then in the same breath are telling you how much better it is (a comparison) with lame reasons like a blu-ray drive.
When it comes down to the consumer's purchasing power and desire to have fun, comparison is going to be a factor.

How about this? launch titles on the ps3 look as good if not better than some on the 360! imagine what they will look like next year? already heavenly sword will surpass anything on the 360 (xcept maybe mass effect) make no mistake about it, the ps3 will pull ahead by `08!! blu ray has already won the war, just look at the numbers!! m$ had a good run this time though didn`t they? lol

ps3 sucks
June 24th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
I always enjoy it when the comment monkeys refer to me as a fanboy. I own a little bit of everything when it comes to gaming, except a 360 or PS3. I'd like to pick up a PS3, but I don't want to pay the current price point. The 360's game stable really has nothing I want. Gears? Sure, it's good, but if I want to play a shooter, I'd prefer my PC and WASD control set. As I've said many times before, I hope the winnner of the console war is the gamer. Who cares which console wins? As long as the competition is heated, we, as gamers, reap the benefits.

Ooooh wow, if I'm "lucky" I can connect a psp to it via Wi-fi. How insanely boring, just like the other "features".
June 25th, 2007 at 4:12 am
I agree with Sony on this one, comparing the ps3 with the wii is like comparing a top-end mountain bike/Racer with a BMX.
I baught a PS3 recently coz:-
*It has Blu-Ray as standard and is also well supported by movie studio's & is
currently leading format war.
*Internal HDD as standard;- which can be upgraded with a bigger 1 later;
* Superior connectivity.
* HDMI 1.3 as standard;- will take advantage of the upcoming 1080p/24fps/120Hz
TV's -10.2 Gbit/s bandwidth/48-bit Deep Color/TrueHD and DTS-HDlossless audio.
*Playstation Brand Loyalty: Millions of Sony fanboys = Guarantee the format wont
dissappear in the near future.
*Plays Xvid,Divx, & now upscales DVD's, Regular Firmware updates
*ps3 Home: 'Genuine innovation'.
The only thing that holding ps3 back at the moment is like of killer aps - which will change in the near future (GTAIV, GT5, Final Fantasy, Heavenly Sword, MGS4). I must admit I was not in favour if Blu-Ray at 1st, thought it was a bit arrogent of Sony to force it on gamers, but I think it will pay off with the 2nd/3rd-gen games (not limited by DVD9).
WII
Is everything BUT revolutionary, is cheap and gimmicky. Just like Rollerblades, Shellsuits, Crazy Frog, and the 'Macarena', ppl who baught a wii will end denying the even owned one.
Xbox360
I am tempted to get one coz of GoW, & Halo 3, Mass Effect, but……
*Widely reported reliability issues its plagued with & poorly manufactured.
*Overheating. And of course the RED RING OF DEATH (Google it if you dont know what it means).
*I know at least 5 ppl who have had to return their 360's coz of RROD.
*Lacks the bells & Whistles of the PS3.
*I hate Microsoft coz its an idea leech and an innovation suppressor

you say you hate Microsoft cause they are an idea leech but yet sony copied nintendo with the motion controller
2nd lacks the bells and Whistles what the hell i didn't ask for bells and whistles i asked for a system that plays good games and lets me connect with my friends and Microsoft gave me that
as for the RROD i had a ps1 and ps2 and they both broke on me
yet my xbox and my xbox 360 both haven't yet
but lets just be real things break sometimes stop being a baby
just get a damn XBOX already and you will be glad you did

i have a wii because:-
1) in my opinion Nintendo make some of the best quality games around.
2) Nintendo make very reliable hardware, more so than sony and microsoft.
3) Nintendo are constantly innovating the user interface for their hardware
4) The ps3 has no attractive games that i cant get on the 360 (for less)
5) Sony copy and suppress innovation, 6 axis controller (copying nintendo) and PSN (copying microsoft).
sony have been experiencing a sort of "catch up" trend since the dawn of its psp. in all fairness sony do make machines to last years, but they wont last years if they aren't at the top of the market.
nintendo have used their experience in the games industry and completely turned it upside down. in affect sony and ms have been forced to change their business plans aka "play catch up".

I truly think the biggest mistake you can possibly do as a gamer is develop really strong loyalty for just one system. Personally, I love the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. We do have room for 3 systems in this economy. Of course some people can only afford one system and are forced to choose, but they still shouldn't be too negative on the other systems. Competition will force games to get better and better.

It seems minds were made up before the release of any console. You will always have followers who don't want the facts they have their minds made up already. When talking of dvd playback don't forget the fine print. HD-DVD and Blu-ray both admit to technical difficulties [movies may freeze, all disc features may not work]. Why would I want a first generation dvd player that sometimes works? I'll wait for the bugs to be worked out and buy a standalone player. Also those who feel the wiimote is limited has neither played a variety of games or the creativity to think of it's possibilities.
The wii can play mp3s, view photos, surf the net, download games from sega, nes, snes, n64, turbograffix, and with the new add-on harddrive neo-geo. Health care workers are using the wii for exercise and rehabilatation.
If I want to watch something with stunning visuals I'll stick to my HD satellite, but since I want to play a game I'll play Tiger Woods on the wii not stare at the grass or characters.

Marvin "just get a damn XBOX already and you will be glad you did"
I began my post with "I just baught a PS3" learn to read dipshit!
And for everyone else who has not baught a next gen console my advice is to google 'red ring of death' first and find out that, indeed, the 360 is unreliable. Its even in Wikipedia:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems
And ahem, here:-
http://www.360-gamer.com/news.asp?id=964
http://techdigest.tv/2007/06/microsoft_needs_1.html
Why PS3 is better then 360 but the games ported to it from the 360 look just the same:-
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=116728&AFC-HSUIT&ATTR=DIGG
Also I forgot to mention before that the 360 is useless for Home cinema as it it way to noisy, its like a mini-cyclone in your living room ready to burn your house down.
You can call me stupid if you want Marvin (takes one to know one) but I cant afford to gamble, sorry.
In the meantime this might cheer you up:-

I just wanted to let everyone that took their time out to bash the PS3 that the PS3 has begun outselling the Xbox360 world wide per week now. Thanks to that nifty price cut and the news of the bundle that is being released in august. Sure, it's a pricey piece of hardware but I've already done the math and with all the things that it would take to make the 360 comparable to the PS3 in package it would cost about $870 dollars.
And thats just with one game involved.
The Wii will always be a hot seller and rightfully so, the little thing is just so darn fun. However, I worry about the Wii when gamers begin to realize that the Wii isn't going to be getting the high-def "next-gen" games like the 360 and PS3 will be getting.
So, I think that when I do purchase a next gen console i'll just stick with the piece of technology which gives me more for my money. Which, right now, is the PS3.
