blu ray logo PS3 Firmware v2.20 Adding BD Live SupportIn the next few days we’ll be seeing a new firmware update on the PlayStation 3. The most noteworthy addition the update will bring is support for Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 or BD-Live, which will allow you to connect to the internet through your Blu-rays to get additional content. This only applies to Blu-rays that support the feature, but it’s nonetheless an important update for those who use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player.

Other features include the ability to send music and photo playlists form your PS3 to your PSP, a remote control function where your PSP can play music on your PS3 without turning your TV on, an updated browser which will help some sites load more quickly, support for playing DivX and WMV files over 2GB, and – to me, most importantly – resume play support on DVDs and Blu-rays. That means you can stop playing a movie and go watch or play something on another disc, and then come back and resume from the same point. This has been the one main reason I hesitated to use my PS3 as my dedicated DVD player, so this is an addition I’m really happy to see.

More details on the firmware update will be revealed on PlayStation.Blog as we get closer to its release, which they said is “coming up in the next few days.”
