PS3 Firmware Updated to 2.42, But Don’t Get Excited

I’ve had some people be critical of me for being so hard on Sony’s firmware releases with PS3. While I love the fact that they release updates more frequently that Microsoft does for the 360, the way they designed the firmware makes it take far too long to update — often with no discernible differences.

That seems to be the case with today’s new firmware update, v2.42. According to a very short announcement post on PlayStation.Blog, the update “improves the playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 and PlayStation format software.” That’s great, but must I really wait 15 minutes for it to update just so I can sign into PSN?

Maybe there are some hidden goodies with this update that Sony’s not talking about, but in the meantime, I think I’ll just continue whining.

How do you feel about the way Sony releases its firmware updates? Should they release them more infrequently or do you not mind the wait?

If the Updates improve the playing quality I don’t mind the wait.

  2. Norbit says:

The updates have added some fantastic features so I couldn’t really care less if I have a 15 min install every few weeks.

  3. ManOfTeal says:

The 15 minute updates don’t bother me. The fact that I have to wait 15- 20 minutes for a game demo to download, AND THEN INSTALL is goddamn ridiculous.

Why the hell can’t the demo simply download and install itself, AT THE SAME TIME!!!!! It downloads and installs at the same time on XBox Live? Does Sony think that makes too much sense? WTF?

    Go Marlins!!!!

  4. B3l0WM3 says:

Im glad they don’t wait long to fix problems… more often the better. Blizzard sometimes takes forever to evaluate classes in WOW people just end up quiting.

  5. SMB says:

ManOfTeal- If I remember correctly the separate install has something to do with there horrible user agreement policy’s.

But I am glad they do these little updates, since I have had my Ps3 it has only gotten better faster stronger.

  6. Man of teal this is to you. says:

no its acually clever because once i downloaded battlefield bad company and i had to leave so after the download had finsihed i could turn it off and wen i reutrned to my ps3 i could install it. duh MS is the dumb ones making you wait more ps3 gives you more options. btw gears of war 2 looks really good… wnna get that one erm the new dashboard for 360 looks stupid. looks like a Wii/ps3 its not MS style but ah who cares when you got all 3 YOUR RICH BITCH. XD

  7. ManOfTeal says:

@Man of teal this is to you

Actually the Xbox 360 will still download AND INSTALL at the same time any downloadable content that you have in your download queue all while the console is turned off.

Why you cannot also do this on the PS3 is beyond me and if it has to do with their user agreement policy then Sony must have some pretty shitty lawyers.

    Go Marlins!!!!

  8. Norbit says:

    @ ManOfTeal

You really have no idea how much of a whiny little bitch you sound

One minute you say the PS3 has no games but when it suits your pathetic agenda having to install demos is suddenly a HUGE problem.

    Pathetic, absolutely pathetic

  9. ManOfTeal says:

    @Norbit,

I find it interesting that when you have no bullshit to come up with to argue with somebody who says the least bit negative thing about Sony you resort to childish name calling.

Grow up….seriously, no one listens to you anyway.

    Go Marlins!!!!

  10. plz die says:

    Die you fucking fanboy shits!?

  11. ManOfTeal says:

And by fanboy shits he means Norbit……just to clear that up.

    Go Marlins!!!!
