PS3 Firmware Update 1.82 “Coming Soon”

firmware182 PS3 Firmware Update 1.82 Coming SoonEric Lempel, Director of the Playstation Network Operations, sends word via the Playstation.Blog that we can expect a firmware update in the next couple of days. The 1.82 firmware update is to allow for the playback of AVC High Profile files (H.264/MPEG-4).

This update really isn’t that much of a “major” one, but I’m happy to see Sony is listening to the feedback that’s being given at their blog. Maybe Microsoft should take a page from Sony’s book and listen to more of it’s users rather than assuming they know what we want. Like who asked for a Marketplace blade, really? How about something more useful like a clan blade?

Hi! Wonderful news, I’ve just updated my PS3 to 1.82. I have one question though… where can I find AVC (H.264/MPEG-4) files? I tried to create my own files from AVI/XVID videos and the PS3 can’t see them. I have the following questions:

    1. What extension has an AVC (H.264/MPEG-4) file?
    2. Does anyone know a guide on how to convert AVI/XVID to AVC (H.264/MPEG-4)?

I think these are not normal video files that you can find anywhere…. so I did SONY put this improvement in the 1.82 update?

    Thanks!

Hi MN, they are quicktime files, see this url for details from apple: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/technologies/h264/

There are a few programs out that will convert divx / mpeg1&2 etc files to h264 quicktime format, I use Videora which does the job just fine.
