psn logo PS3 Firmware 2.40 Features Leaked? The big upcoming firmware v2.40 update for PlayStation 3 has apparently had its details leaked to CVG by an anonymous source. The release is set for about three weeks from now, which will place it just around E3. The update will supposedly allow you to access of all of the following features from the in-game XMB:

  • Friend category
  • View, send, receive messages
  • Manage downloads
  • Set the vibration feature of the controller
  • Sign in to PlayStation Network
  • Register friends
  • Manage Bluetooth devices
  • Terminate the game
  • Music category
  • Use the system BGM
  • Work the system BGM operation panel
  • Settings category
  • Assign controllers
  • View profiles
  • Game category
  • Set audio devices
  • Use the voice changer

I can’t really think of anything that’s missing from that list that I’d want access to. Really, the only thing I really want is friends list access, so I just consider anything else to be a bonus.

BGM refers to the rumored feature that would allow you to play your own music while playing games. CVG points out that it’s still unclear if the feature would work universally, or if only certain games would support it. (My money is on the latter.)

With E3 right around the corner, we should know fairly soon if this turns out to be a credible list or not. Either way, I just hope we get the update very soon. I’m running out of ideas for images for all the stories about it.
