PS3 2.4 Update is Live — In-Game XMB and Trophies for All!
Posted by Chris on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008 at 1:09 pm under Game Companies, Game Consoles, Game Platforms, Gamer Life, Games, Sony, Sony

The day is finally upon us; the v2.40 PS3 firmware update has been released today, meaning the very-long-awaited support for in-game XMB is here, as well as the addition of Trophies. I’ve been playing MLB 08 all morning as I “test” the new features, and so far it gets a big thumbs up. Everything seems to be working without a hitch, and now all we need is for developers to go back and add in support for Trophies and custom soundtracks to their games.
Who knows when or if that’ll happen for each individual game, but you can currently check out Trophies with Super Stardust HD. Unfortunately, Trophies aren’t retroactive, meaning that a Trophy for beating level one won’t be unlocked until you finish that level again. That might be frustrating for some of the trickier Trophies, but it’ll give you a good excuse to revisit your old games. (Assuming, of course, that they get Trophy support added.)
If you’ve already tried out the update, what are your impressions of how it works? Has it lived up to expectations or is there still a long way to go?

My thoughts on v2.40 is that its bricked my ps3 (and thousands of others) i downloaded the update, it restarted the ps3 and now it hangs on the screen saver (wavy screen) on start up. my controllers only flash the red lights and are not responsive to the ps3. i have read a few forums (including Official Ps3 forum) and many many other people suffered the same problem. Update 2.40 can derelick my balls… FU SONY!! there go all my save games.

@Angry
I think what Mr. Weed was trying to say is this:
Dear sir,
While i respect your opinion on this new addition to our gaming experience i feel that you may want to give it some time, as with every type of programming there are glitches that can cause some problems.
Sincerly,
Mr. Dick Weed.
Yes, this is indeed what he was trying to say, and would've said if he had the tact and maturity to address you properly, instead of an immature ass.
And people wonder why gamers/gaming gets a bad rap

@ ANGRY
'Thousands' of others you say?
Is it just me that get suspicious about posts like this? They always seem to be first time posters and always seem to have a deep underlying hatred of the product they claim to own or its manufacturer
I might be wrong. There might be a real problem but all he evidence so far points to the negative.
It reminds me a lot of the first time posters who popped up everywhere on forums declaring they've had 15 360's go 3RROD or all of those guys on here who complained about the 40gb PS3 having a 30% failure rate.
Sadly there are a lot of people who simply lie about this stuff to stir up trouble so unless its a poster with a history on a site I just assume the are talking crap until they supply some proof, which they never do of course

Well I will install this firmware update when I get home tonight. I'll let you guys know tomorrow if it bricks my PS3.
It better not brick either because if it does you will NEVER hear the end of it from me.

I updated my PS3 to 2.40 and it didn't brick my PS3. This pretty much happens with most updates on most anything that has updates. The team that works on the updates don't want to brick your machine, but it just happens. There's no need for the anger and hostility.
Last summer my 360 was bricked because of Overlord. I put the game in and it basically made my 360 take a huge dump. Did I go online and write about my displeasure on the game bricking my 360? No. Bitching about it does nothing, it just annoys those that have to read the crap you spew out. I call Microsoft, got my coffin, sent it away, and I waited for my 360 to come back home.
If your PS3 was bricked, how about you do something more productive than complaining about it like, I don't know, call Sony and get it fixed.

I've actually just read that the update may have be pulled by Sony so there may be something to this after all;
http://kotaku.com/5021575/sony-pulls-ps3-240-firmware-after-reported-problems
Then again it might just be a precautionary move until they can find out the truth of the matter.
I do find it strange that nobody I know has had any problems at all with it

@Daniel
What would piss me off in particular if I install this firmware update and it bricks my machine is that there obviously was not enough beta testing involved before they went ahead and released the firmware.
It's not the fact that my PS3 bricked that would piss me off so much as it would be the lack of adequate preparation beforehand on the part of the manufacturer before releasing a firmware. WE ARE NOT BETA TESTERS!!!! Thourough testing needs to be performed and all bugs need to be worked out BEFORE firmware gets released out into the wild. Or at least major bugs like ones that would cause the machine to brick should be worked out beforehand at least……That is all I'm saying.

I just realised I repeated myself in two separate paragraphs above…..my bad….that's what happens when I'm trying to do a bunch of things at once…..sorry about that.

I wasnt wrong when i said thousands of people as sony have pulled out the update. i was merely one of the first who posted my problem on the net to see if other ppl had the same problem, from Sonys end, they are the ones who released an unfinished/ untested update which screwed a lot of ps3's including mine. i understand that it worked for a few of you, but what happens to the rest of us? we loose all our saves, pictures etc.. and Sony offers me a refurbished ps3 after i called them and explained that it was their fault not ours.

People with a Non Booting PS3 and a PC with spare SATA port try this.
1)Remove the HDD from the PS3 and connect it to your PC,
2)Boot the PC and once in windows quick format the drive to NTFS.
3)Replace drive in PS3 after format and boot, PS3 will ask to format the HDD.
4)Format.
Now it should boot on 2.40
This is for the people who do not want to wait a few days to get another PS3, seems to have been sucessful on the US forums
