PS3 2.4 Update FAQ, and Some Unnoted Changes

The v2.40 firmware update is a significant update, so Sony has posted an FAQ on PlayStation.Blog that hits up a number of questions. Even if you already have been playing around with the changes like I’ve been doing all day, there’s some new information to pull out of the FAQ.

Disappointingly, you can only access the XMB while playing PS3 games; there’s no access while playing PS2 games or watching DVDs or Blu-rays. There may yet be hope, though, as the FAQ states that Sony will “continually engage PS3 owners for feedback and will evaluate the opportunity to offer XMB access during movie playback in the future.”

That’s one of the two most glaring omissions from the update, in my opinion. The other is a lack of cross-game invites. On that subject, the FAQ reads, “No, cross-game invites are not available in this system software update. We are evaluating opportunities to expand on the new features delivered in 2.40.”

Presumably that would have to be something developers would allow, so even if the feature were implemented, it’s unlikely that it will ever cover 100% of PS3 games.

As for other features that went unmentioned by Sony, it seems like the PlayStation Store has been tweaked. This NeoGAF thread has been keeping track of the hidden features and changes the firmware update made, so bookmark that if you’re interested in seeing what springs up.
