Hello, heres my question, I have PS2 Slim (two usb ports included) and have a wired red octane guitar, connected to one of the ps2 controller port. If i want to buy a Drums set and a usb microphone, Do i have to buy a usb hub or connect them to the 2 usb ports that are included with the PS2 slim?

ok here goes, i have rock band for ps2, i also have a ps3, i know that the rock band guitar works for guitar hero on ps2 but can i buy the guitar hero world tour on ps3 and use my rock band controller from ps2 on the ps3??! please reply asap!

Hi, some great info here, can someone sum this up for me
we have the “fat” ps2…..have a chance to buy two guitars and two ghero games from “slim” ps2..now´, i want to buy 80gb ps3 for xmas….will the aforementioned work ?

I was having the same problem with only 2 instruments working too, it took me 3 hours but I think I’ve finally solved. For some odd reason, the Mic MUST be player 1 in order for it to work. The guitar dongle also doesn’t seem to like the USB splitter. So here’s what I did.

1) Start up the PS3 with just a wireless controller on and load Rock Band
2) Go to the screen where you select the instruments (ex. Band Quickplay)
3) Plug the USB splitter into USB slot 1 on your PS3
4) Plug the Microphone into the USB splitter. Make sure that the Singer is listed as PLAYER 1
5) Plug the Guitar dongle into USB slot 2 (NOT THE SPLITTER) and let the dongle find the guitar. Make sure the guitar appears on screen
6) Plug the drums into the USB Splitter (NOT SLOT 3) and let the game find the drums

It should work now. I don’t have a bass guitar but I assume the dongle will detect that as well. Good luck with trying to make this work!

It also brings up a point I remember reading a while back. When Sony was talking about how playing PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3 were sort of like playing games on an emulator. They mentioned something to the effect that the early models of PS3 would perform this way, but that from now one they would read the games in a different way.

I wonder if my ‘old’ PS3 is ‘emulating’ PS2 games and works just like a PS2 right down to using only 2 USB ports? (Although it seems you can use any two at a time and by putting in a third controller that port simply does not work.)

One thing that might help with people trying to get PS2 titles working on the PS3: The actual controller mappings seem to be kind of wonky. For example, when playing games like Champions of Norrath on the PS3, I’ve had to set the controllers to 1A, 1B, and 1C to get three controllers to work. Those settings actually map to controllers 1, 3, and 5 somehow. (This is as opposed to using controllers 1, 2, and 3, as you might assume… which are something like 1A, 2A, and 1B.)

I’ve got the apparently rare 60 gig Playstation 3. My friends brought over their Playstation 2 version of Rock band along with their PS2 drums, mic and guitar. Naturally it has always worked on their own PS2 and they brought it (the PS2) over along with all their gear. I decided to put Rock Band on the PS3 (60 gig) which has Four (4) USB ports.

Only two controllers work at once!

Has no one else encountered this problem? Do you really need the adaptor hub to plug in 3 instruments when there are four ports on the front?

What gives?

Brandon: Thanks for the great info regarding ps2/ps3 40 gig with rockband. We have the ps2 version but I’m considering getting the ps3 software for my husband’s birthday in a few days and have been wondering if the hardware would work. Your information was very helpful! One more question, do I need to buy the software to use the downloadable songs on the ps3? Seems like I would, but it’s worth asking!

Mark: I don’t know about the 60 gig playibility but I can tell you that your friend’s ps2 problem is probably true. We had a “fat” ps2 which seemed to be working fine except it wouldn’t always play dvds. It played Guitar Hero 2 and 3 just fine and even played Rockband for a few days without much trouble. Then it started locking up and played intermittanly. Now it won’t play Rockband or Guitar Hero 3 at all. After reading lots of posts on-line it seems there is something in the laser that may be causing the problem. We bought a used “thin” ps2 on craigslist and use it for the graphics-intensive games. My kids still use the “fat” ps2 for their other games. If the Rockband will work on the 60 gig, $80 is probably a pretty good deal! Good luck!

Here’s my set up and what I am wondering if I can do. I have the 60gig PS3 (has been playing perfect for 9 months with an average of about 5 hours a day on it,love it)and I have the opportunity to buy the PS2 version of Rock Band because my wife’s friend said it wouldn’t work on her PS2 because she was told that different versions of PS2 have different laser strengths and hers wasn’t powerful enough to play through the Rock Bands dual layer disc and she would have to get a new version of the PS2 with a stronger laser. That’s what she was told, I don’t know. But anyways, I can buy the PS2 version of Rock Band from her for $80. What, if any issues will I have for PS2 Rock Band on my 60gig PS3?

I have a PS2 and PS2 Version of RockBand and a 40GB PS3. Here’s the info.

Do you have to have all of the instruments? Nope. Pick and choose at your will. But if you want more than one, buy the whole package.

RockBand for PS2 comes with a hub? YES, if you didn’t get one, you didn’t buy the full package or it was opened before you bought it. Does it matter? No, go get a $10 USB 2.0 hub at Fry’s or BestBuy.

Does PS2 version game work on 40GB? Nope, if you already bought the entire package on PS2, just go get the PS3 game with no instruments. The instruments from RockBand (including wireless guitar) work fine.

Randy, PS2 and PS3 don’t use IR (that’s infrared). It uses RF (radio frequency). The RF receiver is a dongle that plugs into your USB port on the PS2 and PS3. Yes, the PS2 version works fine for both.

Does the Guitar Hero III wireless guitar work? NO, NO, NO

Does the PS2 Guitar Hero work on RockBand? I tried to make this work with the converters out there and only got the guitars to partially work once you get everything turned on and plugged in the right order. Why oh why doesn’t Guitar Hero have a wired guitar for the PS3?

I agree with others above, however, don’t waste your money on the 40GB like I did. Buy the 80GB (currently includes a game anyway), or find a 60GB on Ebay. For those having issues with RockBand from the PS2 on the PS3, it might help to know what version of the PS3 you have. Remember, the 40GB doesn’t support PS2 games. The current 80GB only supports *MOST* PS2 games.

Can I play RockBand’s wireless guitar for PS2 on my original version PS2 console? If so, how does the wireless guitar transmit to the old PS2 since there isn’t a IR port? I read that the RB guitar may not be entirely wireless because there is some box that plugs into the PS2 via USB. Is this correct? Does that mean it will work for me? I would like to know it will work before I buy the game and find out the wireless guitar doesn’t work and then can’t return it.

Editor, you stated that the PS2 will ship with the hub. I just bought the PS2 version of Rock Band and it does not include the hub. I went to two different stores to try to get one. One store had not clue as what to to do have all my instraments connected and the other gave me the wrong device.

And tonight, tried to play Rockband, PS2 version on my PS3 and no go, it was missing data, IE the opening canyon music sequence and it wouldn’t recognize the guitar-red light wouldn’t flash in the adapter. Had to play it on my PS2, What gives?

Allie…you will not need 2 hubs, one 4 port hub using 1 slot will suffice, leaving you a total of 5 ports to play with. you only need 4 to rock with a full band.
And dont worry about the storage, you can buy a 200GB laptop sata drive and throw that in!

Ok….question…WILL the wireless guitars used with Guitar Hero games WORK for Rock Band on a PS2 ?? Curious before making a game only purchase…No interest in the drums etc… just wondering if GH guitars work with Rock Band as well. Thanks
