Professional Drummers Take a Whack at Guitar Hero World Tour's Drum Kit

How do you test if your fake drum kit can take the same kind of punishment as a real drum kit? If you’re Activision, you enlist some professional drummers to do the testing for you. In this trailer, some professional drummers from bands like Blink 182, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Police give their take on the drum kit for the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour. This being a promo for the peripheral, they naturally all approve quite highly. The video also explains how the kit’s sensitivity is different from other fake kits out there (*cough* Rock Band). Really though, none of that matters to me; I just don’t need another space-clogging video game peripheral.

The drum set they're producing seems much neater than the Rock Band one. I noticed throughout the entire video, Activision was pretty much jabbing away at Harmonix's Rock Band drum kit.
I have to admit that this game has been on my radar ever since I read about it in Game Informer. You better believe I'll be preordering it.

Honestly, it's clear it's a better controller.
It's just that it's also annoying. There's no idea of a standard now. Rock Band had 4 pads. This has 5. Konami's game has 6? Am I honestly going to be stuck getting 3 different kits if I wanted to play all of these?
I already bought Rock Band. If its controllers don't work properly in the other games, screw it.

That's how they get you. They make you make a decision. Do you want the Guitar Hero Drum Set bad enough, or will Rock Band's or Konami's satisfy your needs. I don't see this as a bad thing or an attempt to make you pay for three rather similar pieces of machinery. After all, Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are doing the same thing. In thier case, it's video game consoles they are selling instead of Drum Sets. It all boils down to choice really.
Now, if all of the Drum Sets are compatible, I guess get the Konami one since it has 6 pads. *shrugs*

I was skeptical at first, but it seems they are making good decisions here with hardware design considering the competition. Velocity sensitive is definitely upping the ante.
However, there's still the software side that has to gel. I've gotten used to (and now love) the Rock Band look. The way the notes look, the gui, the overall thene. So much now, that the Guitar Hero neon look is annoying everytime I revisit it. If they stick to the same theme as previous GH games, then it will result in mixed feelings from here.
My biggest gripe with Rock Band and drums are the way it implements its overdrive deployment. Annoying to say the least.

Stewart Copeland is AMAZING! He's my all-time favorite drummer.
