crysis Porting CryEngine 2 to PS3 Harder than 360, But Both Will Look PC Like

I don’t think there’s any arguing that Crysis is the best looking thing this side of Jessica Simpson (and 100% less dumb, to boot). So when developer Crytek said that it would be porting the engine the game runs on – CryEngine 2 – to consoles, many a graphic whore got excited at the potential for near Crysis level graphics on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. According to a recent interview, that hope was proven to be more than a simple pipe dream, as Crytek’s Harald Seeley claimed, “We expect the final outcome will result in games that look like they’re running at high settings, or nearly high settings, on a PC.”

He also explained that it’s unlikely we’ll ever be seeing any form of CryEngine on the Wii, as the system’s limited complexity precludes the need for middleware like CryEngine. Interestingly, when asked if Crytek sees their engine as direct competition to Unreal Engine, he said, “We don’t see ourselves as trying to compete with any other particular middleware provider, so much as we see ourselves as an alternative to the high risk course of developing an internal state of the art engine which will both be costly, and may fall short of expectations upon completion.” So, in other words, yes, they are competing directly with Unreal Engine.

As for a console version of Crysis, there was no word or indication of the CryEngine port leading to that. Seeley said that there’s nothing solid to talk about in terms of future development plans for Crytek, so we’ll have to keep waiting to see what’s next. Remember, they aren’t the ones developing Far Cry 2.

Just for hahas I just tried playing Crysis on Very High, since I upgraded some parts recently, and it ran pretty damn solid. It did, however, crash at the same exact point that it did when I tried playing on High right after I installed the new parts.

  2. eh? says:

Some people say that Crysis is more demanding than other CE2 games. They also say, that the high/nearly high means medium-high settings.

    I don’t know what is true. I don’t care.

  3. MG says:

What are some other, released CE2 games?

  4. eh? says:

There aren’t any, but do you honestly think that the other games are going to be as demanding as crysis?

  5. Hed Lyhn says:

Where’s the backup for your article headline?

Where is the information about porting the engine being harder on one console than the other?

  6. Chris says:

If you read the interview, you’d have seen this:

Harald Seeley: Well there is no doubt that porting our engine to the PlayStation 3 is the more challenging of our two ongoing conversion projects, but that works to our advantage in the end. We feel certain we have the ability to get the most that is possible out of that platform, and therefore PS3 games which run on our engine in the future will definitely stand significantly apart from other games that don’t.

  7. Hed Lyhn says:

That interview is in someone else’s news story.

I’m not sure why I’m here. I see your headline, I read your article. It doesn’t support the headline.

Then I’m directed to read the original source that the article came from. Trust me, I wish I’d have seen the other headline first on the google feed. If you want to grab attention, make sure to back it up in your version of the story.

This is a blog about an article you read. Which is fine. I just thought it was a news story… or news report. Even a fresh take on something, editorial, anything.

ps3 wont overheat like the 360 does when it runs a good games.

  9. PS3 wins again says:

Everybody knows the power of the CELL chip is far superior to “high end PCs”. We have only seen 20-30% of the latent power of the PS3.

XBOX 360s however are clapped out already.

Wow, another sony fanboy who swallows the BS in large piles. You may have only seen 20-30% of the Cell processors power, but Cell only accounts for 10% of the mythical 2 TFLOP system power Sony advertises. RSX is pretty much maxed out already, and gets help from Cell. According to Sony and IBM, Cell is 212 GFLOPS (Sony did try to lie and say it was 256 GFLOPS, but IBM set it straight) and RSX is exaggerated at 1.8 TFLOPS. According to IBM, 360’s CPU is 132 GFLOPS and MS hasn’t rated their GPU and daughter processor in the same way Sony has in exaggerating their systems power.

Funny thing is, even Sony admits that RSX needs help from Cell to keep up with the graphics PROCESSORS in Xbox 360.

    360’s GPU > RSX.

    Cell > 360’s CPU.

It’s a wash. forget the hype and BS Sony puts out.

    Dear Ron Howard,

And who the hell are you, BG’s boyfriend?

    Piss off you dick wad!

  12. Chad says:

    hi there.

I myself own a PS3 and a high end gaming desktop. now My Desktops graphics murder ps3’s. Just cause sony says that there cell processor is super fast, does not mean that it is. it is however fast at doing one thing at a time. but when doing more then one it is junk. i think this processor is nothing like the hype they say. it has been out for 3 years now and it still just runs a ps3, what s that about.

Also my pc gaming rig has 2Gb’s of dedicated video memory. How much does the ps3 have?

Anyway I just know that i am not impressed at all with ps3. i hope they will find a new graphics engine to help it out.
