countymaplinear Poll Reveals Politically Influenced Gaming Trends

A new poll by Zogby International reveals the entertainment choices people make are based on their political leanings. They divide the population of the U.S. into the conservative “reds”, the liberal “blues” and the moderate “purples.”

Here’s how Zogby has interpreted the results of the study as far a video gaming preference based on political leanings:

People with a “red” entertainment preference think a lot of programming is in bad taste and doesn’t reflect their values. They don’t play a lot of video games, but when they do, Madden NFL and Mario are their favorites.

People with a “blue” entertainment preference like many of different types of programming, even if it doesn’t reflect their taste or values. They play video games a lot more than other people – Mario and The Sims are favorites.

People with “purple” entertainment preferences like all the broadcast networks and a lot of primetime programming. Mario, Donkey Kong and Madden NFL.

A glaring flaw in this theory as far as video games is that all groups prefer Mario and two of the groups play Madden NFL. The only other games mentioned are The Sims and Donkey Kong. It sounds to me like these researchers know next to nothing about video games and pulled the most familiar titles out for references. If the entire populous of the U.S. is supposedly accounted for in these three groups, who is playing Halo 3 and the rest of best selling games out there? Why aren’t there any casual titles listed? I have to question the validity of the conclusions drawn on the data collected.

I would say the people playing Halo are more niche than the people playing Mario, perhaps a small enough portion that they aren’t in the top 2 or 3 groups. Thats not surprising. As popular as Halo is among the hardcore xbox users, keep in mind, only 3 million people have ever really owned an xbox, thats not much in the grand scheme of gaming. If Halo were on more than 2 platforms ever, it might be more common for people to be playing it.

i could of told you that ages ago!

think about it, would you see a vegetarian eating a chicken.
its the same logic of being able to very accuratly guess a lot of things about a person from little bits of information, in this case their pollitical leanings.

Agree with earlier comments. They just don’t want to admit playing. It’s just like all these polls of women vs. men playing casual games. The men are simply not admitting they are playing…no man wants to tell his buddy that he scored 250K on a game of Lightning Bugs, instead he brags about playing Halo.
