PlayXpert Tries Keeping You Connected While Playing Games

It’s challenge to keep in touch with everyone between the great assortment of chat and IM programs, but once you begin playing a game on PC, that adds another layer to the process. Ideally, PC games would work like Xbox Live, where you can bring up a menu while playing a game and get access to all of your friends. PlayXpert is looking to fill that void by meshing together all of the tools you use and allow you to access all of it while playing a game.
Provided the game runs on DirectX 8 or higher, PlayXpert’s overlay will allow you to access everything from AIM to Xfire to music management. Work is currently being done on additional widgets that will add even more.
Next-Gen has all sorts of details on PXP. It should prove to be very interesting if it all pans out, so we’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for it.

Sweet….
uhh cool.. but i doubt ill switch over from xfire anytime soon.
Why would I want to use another program besides XFire?
Wait…Reading the title and looking at the pictures, I thought it was like Xfire, but then reading the article, it lets you access Xfire? wut?
I think this needs a revisit to explain it more, I am experiencing the same conundrum right now.
So, now that I’ve read the source article and looked at the PXP site, it sounds freaking awesome. Although one thing that worries me is that it’s only DX8 and higher. I play Anarchy Online, which is still DX7 until later this year, when the new engine is released. So I’ll either have to deal without PXP if it releases before the new engine, or wait longer if it releases after. Either way, I suppose it works out fine.
I’ll keep my eye open for this. I was never a fan of Xfire because most my friends didn’t use it that are in my Real Life. To be able to play a game and still be able to chat with those guys will be great.
~Death Dream~
ill stick to xfire.

I’ve actually been a member of playxpert since their closed beta. I’ve tested the first version and also got selected to test an early build of the upcoming version. I don’t think of it as a replacement for xfire because you actually still sign into your xfire account through playxpert and talk to your xfire friends. It lets you connect to a bunch of different messengers at once like trillian. That’s cool and all but what I really like is that it supports different widgets like wowhead and a web browser. If you play WoW, it’s pretty cool to be able to check wowhead from inside the game. I think they plan on putting out new widgets all the time. I’ve only tested it in WoW but it is fast and looks good. It still needs some work but I think it is something totally different than xfire because it does so much more.
You guys aren’t getting it. You could stick to xfire, but maybe you’re talking to someone on AIM who isn’t a gamer, thus they wouldn’t have xfire. Instead of minimizing it over and over (takes forever in steam-based games) you could pull it up in game. Or say you’re listening to Winamp and start to play a game, instead of minimizing it to change the song, you just open it up in game. Or maybe you’re in ventrilo and someone joins, but you don’t recognize the phonetic. You could open the ventrilo window in-game and look.
(Or you could buy a Logitech G-15 or dual monitors.)
I admit i barely read the article the first time.. i see how it works now.. my question is, are you gonna have to have all the other IM processes running or will this be able to log into them without opening lets say the actual AIM program or whatever?
Been waiting for this for a while, originally wanted it for the ingame music player, then read about all the other stuff it does, sounds like a great program.
xx-Thor-xx :
No, playXpert has its own gateways for each of the messenger clients so, for example you don’t need to have aim or msn running in the background for it to work, its the same princable as Trillian, you don’t need all the program processes running to use the gateways.
UGSAce and Daniel Jost:
here is the delema, xfire has to update its client to work with each of the games, and therfore, it won’t work with every game… and… the more important part is that playxpert works on the kernel level so there is absolutly no “interaction” with the game, this, and playxperts ability to verrify the widgets being used, prevents someone from hacking or cracking it to do malicious things, unlike xfire where someone could mess with it and put an installer of it out there thats malicious due to the fact that it interacts with the game.
The Dunce:
problem with the last statment there, with dual monitors, you still can’t change chanels/kick/add channels and so on without the game minimising, as for the g-15 you can set keybinds in vent and on the keyboard, but you can’t kick/ban and other things without alt-tabbing. this is in my opinion the greatest benifit to the playxpert kernel/overlay system.
yeah ive been watching the sight for a while now waiting for them to finish it. all of my frends are getting it so its going to be great.
