service overview for ps network platform PlayStation Network Platform (PSN): The Good and The Bad

When we first heard about the PlayStation Network Platform prior to the PS3 launch, we heard it would be the best thing since sliced bread.  So far, there isn’t a whole lot to cheer about though.    I decided to break down what’s happening right now with it and where things stand.

The Good

  •  The service is free.  There’s no need to mess around with converting real money into points, etc.  When you purchase something, you simply pay for it.
  • Online gameplay is fast and reliable.
  • You can surf the web.

The Bad

  • Voice chat doesn’t work with all games.
  •  Web surfing with Opera is surprisingly slow.
  • There’s no international multiplayer going on yet.
  • You must exit games completely to read messages.

That’s basically the good and the bad highlights as of today.  Things could easily change in the future, but for now it’s a little on the depressing side.  I’ve said that we have to give Sony more time and I’ll say it when it comes to PSN.  The PlayStation Network has the potential to be  great, but right now they can’t come close to offering what Microsoft and Nintendo do.
