burnout paradise2 PlayStation 3 Becoming the Lead Platform, says Tretton

Jack Tretton and other Sony execs’ comments have become a daily subject recently, with Tretton’s most recent interview detailing in not so-specific terms that PS3 is going to increasingly become the lead platform for multiplatform development.

“We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA’s Burnout [Paradise],” Tretton said.

“Developers are telling us that they are starting to create their games on PS3 first and take advantage of the hardware capabilities and then port down to other platforms so we are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits.

“You will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday.”

Considering what we’ve heard from developers, this is the easiest and most efficient method for developing multi-platform games. Moving games from the Xbox 360 over to the PS3 is a more difficult process. But, you have to wonder what the real motivation is for a company like EA when a significantly larger portion of their revenue is coming from Xbox 360 versus PS3. This seems like more of a move for the future, once the PS3’s install base is more significant.

I don’t understand how the more “superior” PS3 can’t handle games that are made on the 360 first?

Maybe the PS3 isn’t the gaming machine people where expecting

    • Tommy says:

Your source? Name a game that the ps3 will not be able to handle but the 360 can, but think before you answer.

  2. da soc says:

You know it’s sad when only the company that made the console is giving it props.

You might as well have just written ‘I AM DUMB’ because it would have said the same thing only more succinctly. The new burnout game apparently runs better on the PS3 than the 360 because it was developed on the PS3 first. Using your retarded logic that means the 360 cant handle it.

da soc said: “You know it’s sad when only the company that made the console is giving it props.”

Which company is that? It cant be Sony you are talking about because in just the last couple of weeks the developers of Burnout Paradise have been praising the PS3 as have Epic. What is sad is people like you and G.E. Whats even sadder is that you are probably the same person.

  4. somewhat says:

Norbit, attacking other people and not just critiquing their comments in a constructive manner makes your own comments a little less credible. I do agree that the PS3 will only get stronger in time, but at the moment, online is best with the 360 (as consoles go at the moment, excluding PC’s of course).

  5. lorgar says:

G.E.: firstly the PS3 could handle the games that are out, its merely a shoddy coding job on the port. It is not a hardware limitation that causes these ports to suffer, it is the conversion process of the coding. there are significant differences between the 2 devices, and until now the developers for the most part had a hard time coping with them.

As for developers giving props to a system, what the hell do they care…they just make the games. They produce it for whichever system sells more not a particular one, save for a few examples.

  6. E> says:

Wow Norbit, Epic and the Burnout developers? What a success the PS3 is having!

  7. turkleton says:

I can’t wait till burnout 3 is in the past, then all this nonsense about PS3 being the lead platform will go away. Sorry jack, the Burnout news is old and the fanboys have already dragged it all over the internet as if one game proves anything.
I don’t have a problem with the PS3, but Burnout 3 does NOT make the PS3 the lead platform, especially considering so many good games just out and coming out are all built on the 360 first. When we start seeing a majority of games looking better on PS3 and released to market first on PS3, then we can start talking about the PS3 being the lead platform. Basically trettons comments are a really nice spin on the fact that the 360 is just easier to develop for. Naturally if its easy to develop for, it will be easier to port TO as well.

  8. Peter says:

I think developers just needed to be sure the PS3 wouldn’t end up being a big flop, now that they see it selling they’re expecting it to have as much success as the PS2. Maybe games wont sell as much now as the Xbox360 but they know that down the road there’s going to be more PS3 owners than XBox360

  9. turkleton says:

“they know that down the road there’s going to be more PS3 owners than XBox360″

Just out of curiousity, how do they know this? Even globally, this is not a sure thing, certainly its not likely in NA.

  10. The Man says:

I think anyone who thinks the PS3 will ‘win’ is uneducated in the matter.

The Wii already won, and I dont even own one.

The fact is that there are more 360’s out there than PS3’s. Also, there are more popular/successful/intelligent/fun/worthwhile/anything games on the Wii and 360. That means developers will prefer that system as there will be more games sold. The 360 and Wii have already ‘beat’ the PS3. Get over it.

Sony is a electronics empire that got too big for its britches and now has to put EVERYTHING they have on the PS3. I hope Samsung destroys Sony for that.

Yes, I am biased. No, I am not a fanboy. I just look at the cold hard facts.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention this.

  11. Daniel says:

Burnout may not be the game that makes PS3 the leading system, but games like Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patriots(which will have online), Unreal Tournament 3(which will be out on PS3 for a longgg time before it comes out on 360), and Killzone 2(also great online) will put the PS3 on top. Those will be the 3 biggest system sellers of PS3. And thats not even mentioning “Home”, which might bring PS3 on top online-wise.

  12. ynotwizard says:

Again, 3 or 4 games does not make the PS3 the leading system. I, although I don’t own one, am a big fan of the PS3. However, I realize that the success of the other two major consoles far exceeds that of the PS3. Like you, I can’t wait for MGS4, UT3, and K2. However, I believe that games such as Super Mario Galaxy, Bioshock, Halo 3, Legend of Zelda, Mass Effect, Call of Duty: 4, Gears of War, Rainbow Six: Vegas, NightS, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption make the Wii and Xbox 360 the better of the three.

  13. Steve says:

The sheer ignorance and zealotry of a lot of our regular commenters has driven me to not bother reading comments on this site anymore. Which is ok, because I don’t get paid to do that. There are far better places on the internet for intellectual conversations.

The logic that because something doesn’t run well on one platform compared to the other equates to a “poor port” is rather ignorant observation. It’s a cop-out that every fanboy seems to like to use.

Unless you are staring at the code outright (and are familiar with its implications), how do you know the work involved is poor effort? For all you know, the devs working on it came up with the most optimized path possible given the hardware restrictions. If something is a “poor port”, perhaps the blame lies outside the programmer?

Fantasize all you want. If you’ve never written source for two radically different pieces of hardware, then you probably have no idea how it really works in the real world. In my experience, if you code software for hardware that offers less resources, optimized paths, and tighter restrictions (cell phones are a good example) then it’s all about getting things within ballpark figures. Seeing your software “emulate” or run close (albeit slightly slower) to something that flat-out has better hardware gives you a sense of pride as a programmer.

The fact of the matter is, the one running an application slower may very well be the one running more clever (and possibly more optimized) code. So don’t blame the software engineers for hardware misgivings. Those coders are probably alot more clever than many are giving credit. The average game programmer these days is certainly alot more clever than the average journalist, gamer, etc. and certainly more intelligent than any console zealot.

The real irony here is that the PR guys get paid more than the programmers. If there’s anyone who deserves the evil-eye…

    Well said, Steve.

  15. blackjack says:

The xbox 360 has a bigger install base than the ps3 because it was released first. What developers know is that sony will support the ps3 long after the ps4 comes out(just like the ps2). While microsoft will most likely drop support of the 360 when their new console comes out(like with the original xbox). So it would be quite beneficial for these developers to become more familiar with the platform. I don’t see it going away anytime soon.
