Rock, Paper, Shotgun has a retrospective on Black Isles’ seminal RPG Planescape Torment. This innovative title has been often imitated but it’s successors have been unable to deliver the same impact as the original title.
Plagued by an indifferent Press upon release and a flawed marketing campaign, this underdog has grown in reputation so that many experts site Planescape as the best PC RPG. It’s reputation is such that few bother to cite why this title has such impact. The article’s author Kieron Gillon describes Planescape best when he says of the game, “Planescape is the reinvention of the text adventure into the modern age, leaving the visuals for everything they’re good at, while leaning on the words to provide emotional resonance.”
Read about one of the most influential RPGs to date on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Be cautioned, the article does contain heavy spoilers for those who haven’t yet had the pleasure of playing this classic.
