A new Devlog is up for Pirates of the Burning Sea, devoted entirely to the first large-scale group mission, Bey’s Retreat. Yes it’s an impenetrable fortress used as a base by the Corsairs of the Main. Indeed even with the main defenses chasing down their fleeing enemies, One ship has no hope of breaking through the defenses alone. However, the developers promise it’s not what you’re imagining.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Dungeon run. WoW raid. Loot treadmill. Fight grunts to reach the boss. Fight the boss. Rinse. Repeat. Seen it before. Meh.
Take my word for it, that isn’t what’s going on here, and you haven’t seen this before.
The mission is balanced to challenge any mix of playing styles, so that no particular formation will have an advantage over another. This is the glue that PotBS hopes will encourage players to actually meet somebody and band together as a community.
That’s a tall order, especially with the statistics stacked against them. The numbers show that 80% of MMO players prefer to solo PvE. However I applaud the developers for realizing that an MMO is only as strong as its community, and actively trying to promote that community. Read the entire devlog on Pirates of the Burning Sea.
