Pictures of the PS3 That was Too Dusty to Repair

By Jonathan on Thursday, November 15th, 2007 at 1:48 PM PST In Uncategorized

A few days back, we wrote about one reader over at The Consumerist who reported that his PS3 warranty had become voided due to the amount of dust on the system, prompting Sony’s service department to refuse repairing it for free. The department also took pictures of the dusty console for their records, but was refusing to release them back to the owner without a subpoena. Well, apparently after the furor he raised online, they decided to go ahead and release the photos of the dusty system to him. So naturally, he posted them online as well, which you can view below.

I have to admit, that’s pretty freakin’ dusty. It doesn’t exactly seem to fit the owner’s story that it sat in his entertainment center since he bought it. I don’t know if it’s an exactly warranty-voiding amount of dust, but that’s still one of the filthier game systems I’ve seen in recent memory. I don’t think anything in my apartment is that dusty, and I haven’t dusted in months.

It’s kind of retarded to send it in with that much dust on it. Had he perhaps cleaned it up a bit before sending it in, this would have never happened. If I was working for Sony and saw that, I would void the warranty in a heart beat for user abuse.

  2. lorgar says:

Yeah i have to agree, even though the thing is a dust magnet…mine hasn’t reached that level ( and i have 3 cats!). I think this guy wanted to see how far it went ha, and i too would let this void the warranty. Yeah you pay 600, and it has been shown to be operable in a sauna….but come on!

  3. LaChandra says:

Do they not sell Swiffer Dusters in his area. My goodness. The only thing in my house that dusty is the blinds because I don’t think to clean them.

  4. Capt says:

You gotta be kidding me thats the most dusty game console I’ve ever seen. What a idiot your right dust it off a bit at least. $600 is alot for a dust bunny collector.

  5. Norbit says:

Pretty much proves that the guy is a liar because he said he had wiped it down and cleaned the I/O sockets with q tips. He obviously hasn’t looked after it at all. It says in the manual to keep dust off it and make sure the vents dont build up.

People should also remember that the majority of household dust is human skin. Basically that guy has sent his PS3 back for repair caked in his own detritus.

  6. lucas says:

this guy has to be kiding what an idiot thats the filthiest console ever more power to sony i wouldnt touch it let alone fix it.

  7. Frank says:

He would have to be the dodgiest person I’ve ever seen.Good on you sony, if you bought that to me I would have shoved that where the sun don’t shine. You don’t deserve to have any electronical good because your a germ, a filthy one too.

  8. Lucas says:

Uh, who is this person a few posts before me using the same name as me?

    On to the point…no comment.

  9. Peter Parker says:

Hands down the filthiest piece of electronics I’ve ever laid my eyes on. This thing is filthier than my car engine. Someone must have tied down this PS3 to the bed of one of those racing pick-up trucks right before a race in the Baja desert. Amazing!

  10. lucas says:

in reply to the other lucas if u can show me your patent of the name I’ll stop using it but I bet Im older so I had the name first thanks buddy Lucas no 1

  11. Microsoft Propaganda says:

This is obvious, Someone who works for microsoft did this.

  12. fu man chu says:

Never thought if propaganda it may well be what a conspiracy theory…

  13. Sergprotector says:

If this is someone from Microsoft, it back fired. I agree with everyone here, how can you buy a $600 system and let it get this dusty. I would have voided it too and maybe even put him on a black list. Never allowing this guy to buy any Sony products. Anyways, Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

  14. Sergprotector says:

oh, and no one take my name please… it’s one of a kind…

  15. SMB says:

I have a surge protector in my house should I rename that?

And ya stupid moran a$$hat would have to know better than to send that in.

  16. Darian says:

I don’t fall for the Sony tactic. Sorry folks, but that PS3 sat noticeably in a storage area of a warehouse like area for some time before they decided to take some pics of it and void the warranty. There is obviously thousands of times more dust in that warehouse than at the guy’s apartment.

People are so easily led… ready to jump on the “winning” bandwagon and point fingers. A little dust I can imagine on it to begin with, but sitting around a receiving center for a few weeks or months would definitely cause that kind of dust collection.

In any event, regardless of the dust problem, Sony could have solved the problem with a $3.00 can of electronics compressed air. This makes sense, because the owner can’t open his PS3 to dust it without voiding the warranty anyway. So it’s a damned if you do, and damned if you don’t scenario.

Here’s the solution - Sony: Knock it the hell off and repair the unit, sending it back to him with the warranty intact. To this day I can play my NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2, Atari, and Sega Units. Dust is not the problem here, obviously… it’s shoddy design.

How did VG-Cats put it? “What’s $600 and smells like snake oil? Next-Gen”

Or.. hey… you could always just tell your customers that they just went out on a limb for a system that is overpriced, only to get shafted. Whichever works for you.. cause it’s not like you need to make customers happy or anything.. they only *buy* the overpriced crap you are selling and keep you in business… not important at all… I stopped buying Sony crap when I bought my PSP. I now use my PSP exclusively for homebrew and emulators.

I won’t be buying anything from Sony until they get their heads out of their butts.

  17. Scott says:

Actually, both sony and the guy could be right. I’ve seen computers shipped through UPS that left our place clean and ended up in a very similar situation at the other end. All it takes is one small hole in the box from a fork-lift or accidental drop, and a dusty environment. Best way to prevent it is to wrap your ps3/computer/whatever in a garbage bag to ensure it stays clean.

  18. Ron Whitaker says:

This is one of those stories where we may never know who’s right and who’s wrong. Could the consumer here be telling a story in the hopes of getting his busted PS3 fixed? Absolutely. He could even have let it get that dusty at this house.

On the other side, maybe Sony just doesn’t want to fix it, so they parked it in a dusty room for a couple of weeks, and then photographed it.

I’d like to see some more information before I went choosing sides in this debate. I don’t imagine either side is going to break down and admit that they are at
fault, so you’ll have to form your own conclusions.

  19. Ron Whitaker says:

Well, it looks like the members of the Gamer Advisory Panel looked into it, and it turns out to be the consumer who’s a little fishy. More info in this thread: http://boards.1up.com/zd/board/message?board.id=games&thread.id=455894&page=3

There is rumor floating around, that Microsoft behind all of this.

  21. j says:

    wheres the pic

  22. Frank says:

The pic is at the top!

  23. Sparky says:

My goodness, did this guy live in a vacuum bag or saw mill?

Ever heard of canned air? A couple large cans worth could have blown away the heavy stuff (inside and outside, without opening it).

Here’s a better concept, as a method preventative maintenance, use canned air once a month. Geez!

Pay for it you slob! His fault, not Sony’s.

  24. Lordofvermillion says:

Having been responsible for sending things back and forth from a service center for almost two years, i can say for sure that these service centers are extremely dusty. at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, that level of dust can come from sitting in a repair center for half a month. sadly, this proves nothing, which is why i take a picture of anything valuble i ship right before i seal the box. better safe than sorry. :)

  25. Affinity says:

Based on the finger smudges and just how ‘caked on’ the dust is, I serious doubt it got this way being in a warehouse.

  26. James says:

Who would do that to a PS3. That is foolish and he is an idiot for not even cleaning it. I agree with sony for voiding that warranty. That is the dustest console i seen in my life and it looks like his grandparents had when they were children and pass it of to him. Dawm, what a waste of $600 buck. Buying PS3 tomorrow YAY!!!! im so eXcited!!!!!!!!

  27. Sean says:

I have seen that dust before, He bought it at the PX in Iraq and when a dust storm comes through it gets into everything. I had a PS2 that looked similar to that when I got done with my tour.

  28. Norbit says:

It appears that not only is this guy telling lies about when and how he got the PS3 but this guy is also an actor which is strange because that hasn’t been mentioned at any point, even in his appearance on Fox News.

This seems to be a well organised attempt by somebody to drum up bad press for Sony just before the holiday season.

I wonder who that could be

  29. smoothn00dle says:

I read that the dust inside is Xbox360 pieces.. That is a classic *v*

  30. angryerthling says:

that looks odd. i work in pc repair and have point of sale systems that come in totally manky (think dust bunnys that have completely filled pc cases) or pcs in offices with chain smokers (a layer of tar on the outside of the case). i have seen manky pcs. those pictures look wrong… if you pick up a really dusty pc or peripheral and pack it to send it for repairs you will have clean spots from where it’s been handled or where the packing has rubbed against it.

not saying that it’s impossible but one picture of the guys entertainment centre would prove it one way or the other.

  31. iplayfofun says:

oh damn.. Im guna go clean mine up now!!

  32. play4me says:

This amount of dust is VERY possible to accumulate within a small time frame. Living in the middle of a desert will wreak havoc on your electronics, although most people living in these areas have the common sense to dust their stuff regularly.

  33. David says:

I have a parrot that spreads a lot of dust to the point that I’m weighing on getting rid of him. He is no where near my electronics, but I could see this happening to my PS3.
