This would truly be the final straw in the high definition DVD wars if true – according to The Financial Times, Paramount is set to drop its HD DVD support following Warner Bros.’ recent move to Blu-ray exclusivity. The Viacom-owned company – and one of the major backers of HD DVD – purportedly has a clause in its HD DVD contract that would allow it to switch to Blu-ray, should Warner Bros. begin backing Blu-ray.

Paramount (along with DreamWorks Animation, which it owns) is behind movies such as the newest Indiana Jones, the Shrek series, and Transformers. While Paramount on its own wouldn’t have been such a major blow to HD DVD’s chances in the format war, the fact that it’s one of the last supporters means a move to Blu-ray would likely coincide with HD DVD’s obituary.

Assuming this pans out, Transformers director Michael Bay is likely to be a very happy camper. You can also expect to see our boss, FileFront editor-in-chief Jon Soucy, doing a poor rendition of the robot somewhere under the pale moonlight.

Am I really that much of a noob? Ron, no comments from you. Point at hand, I feel it’s about time Sony got a foot in the door with a media format. They have had some trouble in the past and it’s nice to see. Let’s hope this does some good for the PS3. This may be the kick in but it needs.

Guess Paramount isn’t just dropping HD DVD just yet

Thats some good photoshop work. Good work Norbit. I hope HD-DVDs not dead but it sure looks like it. i dont care for Bluray or HD-DVD now. Someday i will choose what ever one comes out on top. I do wish one would die so theres a single format.

Who cares? In the end, they both lose:

Neither format is desirable for next-gen gaming. IHMO, this is home theater news, not gaming news.
