SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection

SEGA plans to dole out the nostalgia to gamers come early 2009 when they release their upcoming Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection or if you happen to live in the UK, SEGA’s Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360. This compilation of some of the most popular first-party games from SEGA’s 16-bit Mega Drive years will contain not only classic titles for the SEGA enthusiast, but also some bonus content from its 8-bit Master System and some tubular 1980’s arcade era games.

Currently in development by Backbone Entertainment, SEGA Mega Drive Ultimate Collection houses over 40 games in one package revamped in HD such as:

  • Alien Storm
  • Columns
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3
  • Space Harrier
  • Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3

Each reproduction will run well on HD televisions because they can output in 720p which will be a great change for those of us who played these games back in the day, and a good way to get the newer generations interested in just how far games have come over the years.

This is the largest collection of SEGA first party games ever put on on gaming disc, and while you can get some of the retro goodness mentioned above through Xbox Live or the Wii Virtual Console it will be cheaper in the long run if you just buy the gaming disc when it come out next year. Plus, the games mentioned here are not anywhere near close to 40 titles, so what other surprises SEGA has in store for us within this collection, we will just have to wait and see.

It is comforting to know that some of the games we played while growing up still have a place in today’s market. While it is not healthy to live in the past, it is nice to know that you can still visit it once in a while should your mood dictate it.

Or you could just download an emulator and roms for free, and for a shitload more platforms than this will be offered on.

  2. The Twin says:

Shall I point out that roms are technically illegal? And who doesn’t want to give money to SEGA for the great classics? Okay, who who doesn’t own the great classics? I’d gladly get all of those! (Although Ecco and Sonic 1 & 2 are already on XBLA)

  3. Sk8man says:

I played a Sonic level on LittleBigPlanet last night, It was awesome, HD, semi 3D graphics, who needs HD remakes when the tools to do it yourself are available in LBP?

    Oh, and…..Steph FTW!!!!! LOL

  4. Norbit says:

I will definitely be buying this

    @ Woogie

    1) Roms are illegal

    2) They aren’t optimised for HD

  5. havoc of smeg says:

wonder how the 360 achievements will work? orange box-esque i would think, but that was 5 games, not 40.

i’ll probably buy it, inspite of the fact that i have emulator gear and several of the listed games on my P.C. its quicker to load up on your 360 and the legality is a lot less questionable.
    and in HD, too!!
