Perfect Dark Zero, and Far Cry Instinct Predator al like completely all online achievements. I go to play them online, and no one i even playing them online. That ruins the game in a different way. I want the achievements, but the game is like all online achievements when no one is even playing online

SOME OF US DON'T WANNA PLAY WITH RACIST ASSHOLES WITH TWO MUCH TIME ON THERE HANDS. There i said it, most of the games i try and buy, have like 100 points that you can get online,PLEASE GAMERS START DOING THIS. Kane and Lynch was Fu#king shit, are you kidding me, i passed the game 3 times and i get 500 points, WHAT? so i have to get 700 points online. So that means,YOU a working adult, or nice social person, has to spend the next month with racist/insulting/booting/team killing/HIGH/ assholes who spend all day on xbox cuz there can't really be social in real life. The last i checked i come online to have fun, not fight with pieces of shit that is the xbox community, i completely agree with the article, the best thing do is STOP BUYING the games that cater to a massive amount of online achievments. Lets face it, your not gonna have fun anyway. And the people that say quit whining, please, im fuc#king buying, last i checked if i buy a game i want to enjoy it, yes the whole game. I seriously think 90 percent of the KKK play Gears of War.

Well, the best thing to do really, I guess would be to find a group of people who play to play and don't play just to get achievements. I don't think achievements are necessarily a bad thing. I just think you have to find the right people to play with.

Well designed achievements encourage people to play in a different manner than they normally would in order to get the achievements.

For example the person who normally spends 99% of their time sniping would get a completely different experience from a game if he's trying to rack up x number of melee kills (or whatever).

I agree that the griefer achievements (such as team kill) are a bad thing though.

I think this can all be settled with a choice.

choice A: Create MP games that are NON-achievement based(just play the damn game)

choice B: Create MP games that are achievement based(let all the achievement whores here).

There. Case solved.

I don't own an xbox so I don't know about their specific achievements system, but I have to say some of the systems for PC games, like say Team Fortress 2, are extremely fun and do not ruin the game in anyway. In fact, they add to the fun of the game and encourage people to cooperate with their team.

Xbox may have a different system though.

Some people get satisfaction from getting achievements. If you're a long-time player, that's what keeps you coming back and showing off (in some sense). If you're a casual player, screw you...

Achievements rule.
Bigtime.
Yeah it sucks once in a while when you are trying to defend a Headquarters in COD4 and it comes down to your last guy and your whole team can see that he is just across the map, prone, trying to get sniper kills.
But it doesn't happen all the time.
Game Achievements keep people playing games longer.

"I've been gaming since the 70's and while I used to love trying to beat other people's high score in the arcades I really don't understand these modern achievements. If they don't give me anything, what do I care? "

What did getting high scores in the arcades get you?

I've been gaming since the 70's and while I used to love trying to beat other people's high score in the arcades I really don't understand these modern achievements. If they don't give me anything, what do I care? Do they unlock content or extras? Most of the 360's achievements are utter trash only good for those OCD people that really can't stand not to get a pat on the head every time they manage to do something without uttering screwing the pooch.
I can't help but imagine that when they aren't playing something online and screaming profanity and racial slurs into their headphone, they must be sitting in a corner popping bubble wrap and fidgeting like there is a weasel up their bum. Sure, collect little points and pats on the head all you want... some of us aren't quite that Pavlovian and look fondly back on the days of unlockable/secret content and tangible rewards.

Gears of War did things perfectly, IMO. You can two different systems, ranked and unranked. Games in ranked counted towards achievements, and games in unranked didn't. Its a perfect way to allow a user to play online without caring about achievements.

I personally enjoy trying to obtain multi-player achievements. I think that NOT having achievements is what keeps a game like COD4 from being a 10.

Achievements have not ruined XBox Live; the same idiots who are achievement whores would be doing something else idiotic online (PK, anyone?) if they weren't going for Gamerpoints. We all know this. The secret to online gaming is the same as it's always been: Find people you know you like playing with and stick with them, or be prepared to play with jackoffs.

Achievements enhance my game playing experience. I do not agree with online achievements since they are frequently ridiculously hard to get, or tedious, or just plain stupid, but I do enjoy campaign achievements.
