Old School Sunday: Q*bert

If you are old school, I would find it hard to believe that you never heard of Q*bert. Although the game has pretty much faded into obscurity, it was a great game back in the day. Most of the great games of the early 80s were cloned out a hundred times, but somehow Q*bert was never really messed with, which really helps it retain some value in my opinion.

The game was simple, yet challenging. The object of the game was to hop on cubes of a pyramid shaped playing field to change their color to the requested one. The first few levels are simple where you have to complete single color changes, but as the game goes on, the number of color change requests goes up. To make things harder, there was an assortment of “baddies” hopping around the playing field as well. During the game’s hay day, it seemed like everyone I knew played it. For whatever reason, the game has simply faded away and I rarely hear it mentioned these days.

I was hoping this was going to be the free arcade game for XBox live subscribers, but oh well. As I remember, even adults were on to this game when I was a kid. And there was a cartoon also, I think. He was as big as Pac-Man.

I vaguely remember a cartoon. I was going to mention something about that, but I really couldn’t recall any details.
