Obvious News of the Day: Diablo III Not the Final Diablo Game

During the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France in June, Diablo III Lead Designer Jay Wilson speaking with MTV’s Tracey John stated what might possibly be the least needed confirmation in video game history – that Blizzard has plans and ideas for Diablo games beyond the upcoming third installment. Wilson was responding to the claim that Diablo III would round out the Diablo series as a Trilogy:

“We’re not saying this is the end of the Diablo universe, but we are trying to bring this storyline to a close,” noted lead designer Jay Wilson. “It’s not just Diablo III — we’ve got plans beyond.”

Wilson also commented on some of the character options the upcoming sequel would deliver. He maintained that while the game was continuing the story of the previous two not every character class would be returning. This is in keeping with the trend set with the changes of classes between Diablo and its sequel but that some classic options from Diablo I might even return to the field of battle.

“We also tried to focus a little more on bringing characters back, and not just from Diablo II but from Diablo I. We feel like a lot of the focus is on Diablo II but Diablo I started it all and has a lot of really good stuff on the gameplay side and on the character side. So people can expect to see characters from Diablo I, more characters from Diablo II, and characters from some of the books. We’re definitely going to bring a few of them in.”

Is this good news for folks yearning to play as the Rogue or Warrior classes again? I guess we’ll have to wait for Blizzard to begin dolling out details in the coming years before the games eventual release sometime in this century (i.e. when its done).
