There’s a new Q&A out on Neverwitner Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate. The interview with Alan Miranda, CEO of Ossian Studios, Producer and Co-Lead Designer; Luke Scull, Lead Designer; and Kevin Smith, Lead Technical Designer on Mysteries of Westgate covers musical score, voice acting, and companions for the Adventure Pack.
One of the areas that has needed improvement in my opinion is the companion NPCs. They aren’t well fleshed out and don’t really interact with the character situationally. You never really develop an interest or attachment to them as you do say Minsc and his “Miniature Giant Space Hamster” Boo from the Baldurs Gate series. Ossian is working to change that.
How interactive are the companions. NWN1, NWN2, or MotB level?
Luke Scull: We identified the companion interaction in the NWN2 OC as being a little lacking in some regards, particularly the contextual relevance of some of their responses. Therefore, we determined that a) Companions needed story-contextual things to say rather than introducing themselves two-thirds of the way through the story, b) They needed to voice their opinions and provide input according to their personalities, and c) They should each have an interesting story that develops during the course of the overall plot, which the player can influence in some way.
