If you’ve seen any screenshots from the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, then you’re already well aware that the developers have applied a fresh coat of hand-drawn paint to the classic Street Fighter look. However, that’s just the most obvious change that this new Street Fighter brings to the table. The developers also went through the old game meticulously, trying to find ways to rebalance the fighting and figure out a handful of new moves.

“We know quite a bit about this game. It’s unusual that we know so much about a game, but it’s been played in tournaments for 14 years,” says [lead designer David] Sirlin. “So we sorted out that there were these ‘best’ [playing] characters, and there were these ‘worst’ characters. We’re trying to compress these tiers, so the best characters are still good, but are a little worse — where we take out these abusive [moves].”

As such, HD Remix may look familiar, but the developers are convinced it will play like a completely new version of the game. Most of the tweaks will only be noticeable to those who have logged plenty of hours into the game, but others will stand out — such as Ryu’s “fake fireball.” Be sure to check out the video below for a more detailed interview with David Sirlin on what’s different about this Street Fighter.
