Nintendo’s Laurent Fischer Apologizes for “Geeks and Otaku” Remarks…Sort Of

Nintendo of Europe’s managing director of marketing. Laurent Fischer, certainly caused a stir with gamers the other day when he commented that “geeks and otaku” were the only ones who cared about the Wii’s storage problems. Obviously, that’s oversimplifying the issue quite a bit, not to mention outright insulting a large chunk of the company’s fan base. Not a wise move. Now though, Fischer has issued a statement apologizing for his remarks…sort of:

“I have huge respect for those who, like me, share a common passion for Nintendo and want to make it clear that I would never use and I didn’t use this terminology in such a context or way to cause offence. I regret that this misunderstanding has created such offence and disappointment within the community.”

Okay. I didn’t exactly hear an apology in there, per se, but I guess that’ll have to do. Seriously though, the massive amount of consoles out there and the number of games flooding the Virtual Console and WiiWare, Nintendo is going to have to start thinking about a solution to these issues sooner or later; and not just for the hardcore gamers. I think Nintendo has learned though that insulting your fans only works if you’re a punk rock band.
