Nintendo Wii Approaching 20 Million Units Sold

Whether you like the Wii or not, it seems nothing is going to slow down sales for Nintendo. At the current rate of sales, Nintendo will end up selling 20 million units at a rate of 1.54 million units per month and reach the 20 million milestone 6 months faster than the Sony PS2 did.

The interesting fact is that Microsoft may actually be outperforming the Nintendo Wii outside of Japan. Less than 4% of Xbox 360 sales come from inside Japan and this could be the single aspect that gives Nintendo the world-wide edge. The Sony PS3 is still way behind both Nintendo and Microsoft, but 2008 will be a long year. I have always felt that 2008 will be the year for Sony, so we’ll just have to see.

You might have noticed that the PS3’s market share is rising weekly while the 360’s is falling. Just a few weeks ago Sony were at 17% with the 360 at 40%. 37.4% and falling rapidly doesn’t sound to good when you remember that for a year they had the market 100% to themselves. They have had to sell the 360 for way less than the PS3 to compete yet I believe the PS3 has reached 8m sold faster than the 360 yet the PS3 still hasn’t released any of its big franchises or its full online service yet.

  2. Joelteon7 says:

Nintendo and Microsoft could really use this to their advantage, if they chose to. Clever marketing by each would pit one another as competitors leaving out the PS3 to make fire on its own fuel. If I was a businessman, of course, that’s what I’d be thinking of doing.

Outperforming by what standard? Pure dollars, I don’t even think there. Game sales, probably. But not including Japan, the Wii has sold something like 12 million units in its first year. The 360 is only at 15 million in its first TWO years.

As for the 360 and PS3, the PS3 is selling very similarly to what the 360 did in its first year, although, due to poor sales in Japan, this means the 360 is crushing the PS3 in the US. But even so, the first year of xbox sales were not very good, only matching sales of the original xbox. It wasn’t until year 2 that the 360 started outselling the orginal xbox sales numbers based on months since launch.

As for the PS3 gaining market share vs. the 360, thats a bit misleading since the 360 is still out selling the PS3 consistently in every market outside Japan. The reason the PS3 is gaining market share is because the 360 isn’t outselling it by ENOUGH to maintain its market share. To simplify, if the 360 has a market share of 40 percent and the PS3 has a market share of 20 percent, then (without regard for the Wii), the 360 must DOUBLE sales of the PS3 to not lose market share. If the 360 outsells the PS3 by 60 percent, it will STILL lose market share simply because of the ratio. So to say the 360 is in trouble because its losing market share to the PS3, is a bit disingenuous at best and just plain trickery at worst.

    @ Used Cisco.

The 360 is selling better than the PS3 in the US but that’s it. In Pal regions and Japan its getting its arse whipped even though the 360 is cheaper and has more games. Whatever way you look at it that is bad news unless you are completely retarded. There is nothing the 360 can do to turn that around because they are already having to sell far cheaper and their biggest games are already out. The situation is only going to get worse as PS3 sales get better. The PS3 will sell more than the 360 probably by the end of 2008.

I love the way you are now trying to make out the 360 didn’t actually do very well in its first year just because the PS3 has equalled it. I suppose its because it makes you look a bit stupid when you have spent the last year saying the PS3 is tanking but it has actually reached 8m faster than the 360, so much so that you are now trying to alter history to make the PS3 look bad.

Fact #1: The 360 sold very well.
Fact #2: The PS3 is selling better.

  5. Kato says:

@ Norbit. The situation is this, if it gets worse, its not going to benefit PS3, Xbox 360 is likely to lose the US market share to Nintendo than from Sony.

It is Sony that is having to sell their consoles far cheapear than their value because no body is buying them. Microsoft is making a surplus on the Xbox 360 sales, they’ve been doing it since Nov. 2006.

“Is it me, or is Norbit always sounding like a crybaby bitch everytime he leaves a reply.”

    yeah, pretty much.

“There is nothing the 360 can do to turn that around because they are already having to sell far cheaper ”

What? The PS3 is losing WAY more per unit than the 360. Sony is literally bending over to get people to buy the thing. The 360 is likely profiting on hardware by now and could easily drop the price again soon. Sony can’t afford another price cut. They’ve already cut it by $100 twice out of sheer desperation. The 360 held its price for nearly 2 years. The PS3 made its first price cut in Japan before it even launched.

“The 360 is selling better than the PS3 in the US but that’s it.”

Unfortunately for the PS3, the US is the largest console sales market, by a significant margin, in fact, the total number of next gen consoles (360+PS3+Wii) sold in NA is about the same as the total sold in the rest of the world combined.

“The PS3 will sell more than the 360 probably by the end of 2008.”

Do you mean the total global PS3 sales will have surpassed total global 360 sales by the end of calender year 2008? Not a chance. If you mean monthly global sales, thats certainly possible, much like the xbox360 outsold the Wii in september on the back of Halo 3.

“I love the way you are now trying to make out the 360 didn’t actually do very well in its first year just because the PS3 has equalled it.”

Hardly. I’ve have always claimed the 360 underperformed its first year. MS had to pull back its shipment estimates TWICE because it was clear they were not selling what they expected. Combine that with production shortages in the first 4 months and you have a first year sales total similar to that of the first gen XBOX. Sorry, but that isn’t impressive for the 360 and its EVEN LESS impressive for the almighty PS3. If you had told me 2 years ago that the PS3 would only sell as well as the original xbox in its first year, I would have laughed at you. Now YOU are trying to spin that level of sales into some sort of success? Pathetic. And very sad.

“Fact #1: The 360 sold very well.”

Only if you consider MS missing nearly EVERY sales forcast to be selling “very well”. And only if you consider the original xbox to have sold “very well”.

“Fact #2: The PS3 is selling better.”

The PS3 is tracking pretty even actually. If you want to split hairs on a few percentage points, that only makes you look more desperate.

“I suppose its because it makes you look a bit stupid when you have spent the last year saying the PS3 is tanking but it has actually reached 8m faster than the 360″

Who cares about the 360. Its getting its ass handed to it by the Wii, plain and simple. If the 360 is your yard stick for success, you better get ready for a bitch slap from reality. If you want to gauge success, start measuring against the PS2 and the Wii. Thats where we can see just how much the PS3 is struggling. You say the PS3 beat the 360 to 8 million. While I’m not sure if thats true, my response is, “It sure as hell better!” The PS3 is following the PS2 with over 120 million install base and it can just barely beat the 360 to 8 million? Are you serious?

“you are now trying to alter history to make the PS3 look bad”

Unfortunately I don’t have to alter history to make the PS3 look bad. It does that all by itself.

  10. Norbit says:

Used Cisco, you are a moron. The PS3 is already selling more each month worldwide than the 360. Last week for instance the PS3 sold 619k compared to 594k for the 360. A console can not survive in just the states, that’s why the Xbox died. The PS3 is selling more each week worldwide even though its got a huge amount of features and massive franchises to come while on the other hand the 360 is at the height of its popularity. Can you not see what that means? Are you really that thick? That’s like a car going full speed being beaten by one that hasn’t even shifted out of 1st gear yet.

It will overtake the 360 in total sales by the end of 2008.

  11. used cisco says:

“It will overtake the 360 in total sales by the end of 2008.”

VGchartz (if you have more accurate global totals, I’m happy to look at them) has PS3 currently at about 8.4 million units globally. The 360 is currently at about 15.7 million globally. A difference of 7.3 million. Based on it being more than a year since launch in most territories, but with a late launch in PAL, we can say its selling about 8 million per year so far. Pretty much the same for the 360, give or take a few hundred thousand. For the PS3 to pass the 360 in 08, the PS3 would have to continue selling at the same rate it has been (which you seem to think is pretty good) AND the 360 would have to sell ZERO units. Ok, well that scenario isn’t very likely is it? How about this? What if the PS3 sells DOUBLE in 08 what it did in 07 (that means it would have to double a sales rate thats already doing “pretty good”), that would put it at 24 million. If the 360 maintains its current sales rate it will also be pretty close to 24 million at the end of next year.
Considering we’ve seen year on year increases from the 360, odds are good it will sell more in 08 than it did in 07. That being the case, the PS3 would have to sell MORE THAN DOUBLE what it did in 07 in every week of 08. Is that possible? Maybe, but is it probable? Nope. Add in a price drop for the 360 and its ensuing sales bump, and you’ve got an even more difficult situation. I’d never say the PS3 won’t eventually surpass the 360, it certainly may, given enough time. But in 08? Thats bloody wishful thinking I say.

So, lets wait and see who the moron is, shall we?

    Norbit…..quit your bitchin……the PS3 sucks……Wii60 FTW!!!!!

  13. Okay, first things first… This was suppose to be an article about how great the Wii is doing, not a PS3 vs 360 battle, which it has become. Maybe I am biased (or unbiased because I have both a PS3 and 360, and play friends Wii systems regularly), but the point is, who cares?!?!

I totally feel it would be great if all 3 systems do well, and most everyone would benefit if they do. Why split hairs and fight over who is best? Is it to justify the one purchase that someone made? Again, who cares. I have read some of the articles from “industry experts” or analyst which are saying that there probably wont be clear cut winners or losers in this generation. What is wrong with that? I say that is great. Give us all more to experience and do. Competition is great.

Finally, aren’t we all individuals? Isn’t it okay to have different likes or dislikes than someone else? It would be a boring world if we all liked the same things. I say quit giving someone a hard time just because they like a different system than you. I say respect them for it, and if you have to waste time on it, look at why they like this different system, and maybe you can gain a new perspective, instead of always being stuck to one closed door opinion. Thanks

    @dented skillet,

I completely agree with your comments. This all started when norbit got pissy about the line in the story that the PS3 was way behind MS and N. The thing is, it IS way behind. The article is spot on. Who cares? Norbit, thats who. The kid is heavily invested in Sony love and doesn’t like anyone who notices that its in a distant third place.

Give him a break, he’s probably only a kid.

  15. Jesse says:

Norbit’s desperation is as obvious as the PS3’s miserable failure.

In fact, I haven’t seen this much defensiveness over a new platform since Nintendo’s earlier flops with the N64 and Game Cube, their fans were just not accepting the truth. I guess it’s the PS3 fans’ turn.

The facts of the matter are that the PS3 is drowning everywhere, and it is even massively underporforming not just expectations, but it doesn’t have 1/3 of the market share and unless it increases sales significantly it never will be. Whichever way you cut it, the snapshot shows a sad picture for the PS3.
The future doesn’t look so bright either unless you spin it with optimistic and hopeful projections that a one-time price cut will lead to a continual increase in sales, which I’ll leave to the PS3 fan club to try to use as an argument.

  16. Jesse says:

Oh yeah, as for the Wii, it is nice to see a company finally reward its very patient fans with a quality product that adds real value to the video game industry.

The wii earned its market share.

Who would have thought that Nintendo’s Wii would have gone on to capture almost half the market share in about a year and be on pace to continue to set records and be all over the newspapers and online articles for its success as an electronics product and as a Christmas gift… again!
