As an old-school FPS guy (Tribes ftw), I can tell you that the original UT wasn't nearly the success that other shooters of the day were. Half-Life / CS dominated the shooter market for a long time. I would speculate that as many people played Team Fortress Classic as played the original UT.

However, UT2004 made great strides in broadening the playerbase. With the addition of vehicles, the multiplayer became much more popular. However, it still never surpassed the Half-Life / CS combo.

Will UT3 finally break the series through? No one knows right now. However, TF2 will be out at the same time, and a lot of long-time shooter fans (myself included) are drooling over the chance to pick up TF again. Only time will tell.

Ahem.

GK, you can't just throw wild assumptions out there and put the statement "fact." behind it without listing any sources of information.

For example:

OMEg. Haf-life iz like teh best evar, UT iz like fur nubz. fact.

Now, in repose:

Half-life is the best selling PC shooter to date, with over 8 million copies sold. Half-life also spawned Counter-strike, which remains one of the most popular online First-Person-Shooters in history. Fact.

Sources:

See, that's how it works.

Saying you're biased and then saying you should write an article (which should be objective) contradicts each other. The fact is, UT was overshadowed by the other FPS' that simply had a bigger name.

In terms of "rapid-movement-ridiculous-fighting" FPS' (there are different types of FPS' I believe) then Quake was the way to go. Then Half-Life. It was really only till Unreal Tournament 2004 came out that people realised that it was actually a rather awesome game.

As for the screens, that second big one just looks insane. I now severely doubt my PC will be able to play this (even though it plays UT04 maxed out with ease) with shots like that, however, it does look awesome.

The thing about this and Halo is that I think that people will have already been focused on two games. GTA and Halo. Whether or not people will have set aside any more money for any 'surprises' remains to be seen, but the PS crowd will definitely be getting it. As for MS...not right away, but thed demand will be there. It's pretty much guaranteed though to be pretty awesome, no matter what console it's due out to be on.

omg what are you talkign about ?!! ut a niche?? :???: UT was not overshadowed by Half life or QUake. It freakin DEFINED the FPS genre and was to the extent that it became the modded and community supported fps of all time. fact. finally set out on its own? you are on crack dood. or Quake fanboy. Not only that, you are WAYYY behind.. those screenshots have been out for a while now (at least since last week for some...other for WEEKS!!).

perhaps someone who actually knows UT or FPS genre should be making this kind of announcement. if anyone wants ppl who know Unreal Tournament from the insiders AND industry view... come by: www.UnrealAddicts.com

yup, we're biased... but we get industry news updates from EPIC and Beyond Unreal... so at least its actually up-to-date.
