In what may be the most accurate name of the series yet, Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground may end up having to do just that. The undisputed king of the skateboard genre has reigned for years, and this will be the first chance that they will truly be tested. The media for EA’s SKATE has driven skateboarding fans to realize that maybe Tony Hawk was the best only because they were the only choice in town. SKATE’s realistic style is going up against the 9,999,999 point combos of Tony Hawk, and this year we will see what gamers truly prefer. Don’t count out Tony Hawk just yet tho, as this trailer hints at some hidden greatness:

Will it be enough to overcome EA’s media blitzkrieg? It’s hard to say. Let’s just hope the new competition will inspire both gaming developers to make the absolute best game they can. If they can do that, then we all win.
