New PlayStation 2 for Japan, Europe; No US Announcement Yet

The US was the last to get word that a 40 GB PlayStation 3 was coming, and it looks like the US will be the last to hear about a redesigned PS2. Reuters is reporting that Japan will be getting a new, lighter PS2 that includes an internal power adapter and is lighter. GamesIndustry.biz is confirming the same for Europe, although neither makes any mention of the price cut that was rumored to be coming with the new PS2 model.
The system will look identical to the current PS2 slimlines, and will hit Japan later this month and in 2008 in Europe. Given that scenario, we’ll likely be well into 2008 before we see this new model in the US.
