Live Anywhere had a lot of promise when it was first announced. The initiative would connect a number of different platforms — namely Xbox (Live), Windows, Zune, Windows Mobile — so that you would have a single identity, with a single friends list and message system. That truly had the potential to be a brilliant service, and as far-fetched as it sounded, seeing it demonstrated on that Motorola Q phone (which I vowed to purchase, but have yet to do so) on stage at E3 2006 made it seem like we were on the verge of getting our hands on it.

As of today, the closest we have to that is the ability to share Microsoft Points between your Zune account and Xbox Live, or send messages from the few Games for Windows Live-enabled games to those on Xbox Live. It’s a far cry from what Live Anywhere was touted as being.

Jeff “What’s Your Contribution to Society” Bell was on hand at this week’s Ziff Davis Electronic Gaming Summit and reassured gamers it’s still coming, although he didn’t really make it seem like the big deal Microsoft did back at that E3.

Bell said, “Live anywhere is not abandoned, it’s just not easy to do.”

It’s not easy to send pieces of information from different sources to a single unified source, eh?

    OpenID, anyone?

Fucking pricks can’t figure out something that’s already been done.
