Earlier this week, we brought you the trailer for the upcoming Wii version of the latest installment in the Mortal Kombat series. Now, there’s some new information on the title, including why it will not offer online play, in a new interview.
First off, let’s go over the good news. There will be a female character, Khameleon, who is exclusive to the Wii version of the game. While she’s not technically new, she hasn’t been included in a MK title since Trilogy on the N64. Also, the game will make full use of the unique Wii controllers. “Every super move in the game is done with a gesture you do with the Wii-Remote. We also wanted the motions to help you feel more connected to the game,” says producer Shaun Himmerick.
Now, the bad news. There is NO online multiplayer. None. When asked why not, Himmerick points the finger squarely at Nintendo. “Obviously we had online on other platforms so it wasn’t going to be a technology challenge for us, but Nintendo didn’t have their online system ready for us when we would have needed to implement it. That is a big reason we focused on giving the single player experience even more attention to perfect the new Controls system, the addition of Endurance mode and an additional Kharacter.”
You’d have to think that with the ‘online’ capabilities of the Wii, they would WANT developers to create games that have online components. Apparently, the online side of things is a very low priority. That’s just one more thing that sets the Wii apart from the crowd, I guess. Whether it’s good or bad is up to you.
