Now, granted, these songs do come in song packs from the Xbox Live Marketplace. But that number is staggering as well – Activision has sold 650,000 song packs, each containing three songs. Each song pack sells for 500 Microsoft Points, which equates to a little over $6. This just goes to show you how profitable downloadable content can be for publishers.
“The Guitar Hero II downloadable videogame song packs are some of the most popular content on Xbox Live and are quickly becoming a very lucrative revenue stream and powerful promotional vehicle for musicians and record labels,” commented Dusty Welch, head of publishing for RedOctane.
“Activision was the first third-party publisher to offer downloadable content via Xbox Live to consumers and as a result, we have tremendous insight into the types of content that consumers want.”

I’m actually stunned by this. None of those packs ever seemed worthy to me, but I guess I’m the odd duck out. Last I checked there were 750,000 names to the GH2 online rankings. Granted, people are buying more than one song pack.
Imagine if they actually put out more than the 5(x3) or so song packs they have on Live? If this is any indication, Rock Band is going to make a killing with the full album downloads. I’d certainly be a sucker for some Zepplin or Rush.
the reason there are so many downloads on xbox live are because most of those music pack songs are from the original guitar hero for the PS2. but people like me who do not have the original guitar hero or may not have a PS2, but do own a xbox 360, want to play those songs. which is smart, considering i dont think they will rerelease the first guitar hero for any other game system.
