crackdown Microsoft Owns the Crackdown IP, Crackdown 2 a Possibility

After hearing that Crackdown developer Real Time Worlds had moved on from Crackdown last year, I was extremely disappointed. I absolutely loved the game, and it remains one of my top games of 2007 and one of the best on Xbox 360. There was so much more that could come from a sequel, but it seemed like the potential for a Crackdown 2 was killed when Real Time Worlds moved on. As it turns out, Microsoft is the IP owner, and that means another Crackdown game is possible.

Microsoft Game Studios corporate VP Shane Kim told Game|Life:

We own the Crackdown intellectual property. We have a great partnership with Real Time Worlds, and they’re pursuing a different path from a company perspective. So I wouldn’t say that it’s Microsoft not picking up the option there. I don’t really want to talk about that discussion, but it wasn’t the case where — we still love Crackdown. We consider that a pretty successful title for us, high-quality, I think that customers would like to see more in that space. So that’s an option for us. But I think for Real Time Worlds, they made a company decision.

He also said, “…any intellectual property that we own can always be on the table. And the good news is that we happen to own the Crackdown IP.” I’m hoping that Microsoft doesn’t sit on Crackdown for too long. We all know the kind of first party support the PlayStation 3 is going to have, and the Xbox 360 could use all the help it can get.

    If Crackdown 2 does come out, how about some kind of story? The story in Crackdown was…well, I can’t even say it was bad since there was no story! Your an agent… there are bad guys… kill bad guys… The End.

    Booooo!

    @Daniel…
    Wasn’t that the whole point of crackdown, though?
    Personally, I think that part of Crackdown’s charm was the fact that it worked, despite there being pretty much no story whatsoever…

  3. carg0 says:

    i don’t understand, i thought Crackdown (while not a phenomenal, genre-defining title) was a monetary success. the whole Halo 3 beta test should’ve seen to that.

    is it stated anywhere just how many units were sold?

  4. havoc of smeg says:

    i thought it was a fairly decent game, and i wont object to a sequal.

    @daniel & l!me
    think the ’story’ part of it means the second cinematic after you defeat the very last boss.
    at least thats what i reckon, anyway.

    Crackdown had a hard to follow story, but it still was fun.

    who cares about a story… if you want a story go watch bambi. they need to focus on more weapons and a smoother targeting system, being able to call for backup or recruit regular agents, not to forget more hand to hand combat other than a spin kick… a knife would be nice,I like that the blood is represented by the skill orbs that you collect, maybe add rogue agents to defeat so it would be like a captain planet vs. captain pollution kind of thing. not to forget the combat system.. you need to be able to hug walls and shoot around corners,blind fire that kind of thing just beef up the tactical stratigieness to the entire war.. Crackdown Definitely needs a sequel Halo3 sucks its halo2 maps with a little more eye candy thats it no more no less… crackdown is a fresh perspective which can be expanded upon 10x what you could do for HALO anymore. Imagine a crackdown Death match say like the new gta4 online is but crackdown style.
