Microsoft Has One Week to Respond to Scratching Issues

Xbox 360 Scratched DiscNot long ago, a Dutch television show called Kassa aired a segment that exposed proof that the Xbox 360 damages discs. Rumors and statements have been circulating ever since the console came on the market that the 360 has some issues, and I had to send mine back 2 weeks after purchasing it to get the error readings to disappear. Meglena Kuneva, the European Commissioner for Consumer Affairs is giving Microsoft one week to detail how it is handling reports of discs scratched from consoles in the Netherlands, she wants to know how widespread the issue is, and wants a count of similar complaints in other markets. Kuneva stated that she “doesn’t have the competencies to force a recall at this time”, but warned that she will be “more than happy to act” if she finds the legal grounds. It is about time someone forced the issue of shoddy game consoles, and hopefully the big three will take extra special steps to ensure a quality product from now on. Notice I said hopefully.

I have provided a link to the infamous video, please note that it is spoken in Dutch instead of the King’s English, but you can still get the gist of what is going on with the console.

Unless I'm the only one with an error, the 'infamous video' link is bust and I don't want to navigate a Dutch site from the first link.

My question here is, "What the hell is wrong with Europeans?"

I mean that in the sense that the EU has been bitching at Microsoft (which i am NOT defending) for including MICROSOFT internet explorer, and MICROSOFT media player in a MICROSOFT operation system.

Now they are ordering M$ to respond to this…who the hell do they think they are?

  • Trax says:

They are consumers who just want a decent product, one that doesn't ruin other products.

I guess you get what you pay for.

I wish MS would respond to the 360's hardware failures (red rings of death) which appear to be more common than the scratching disc issue, at least here in the states. My brother and I have personally gone through five 360 consoles in one year and anything that actually makes a company accountable for and take responsibility for a shoddy product that obviously fails WAY above the industry norm is a welcomed breath of fresh air. It seems like all high end electronics, not just game consoles, are being rushed out the door at a greater frequency to capitalize on consumer trends before they have been properly tested. I stand behind anything that keeps the consumer from being ripped off by hype advertising and broken products.

Just looking at the picture, there is no way anything like that should roll off the assembly line for $400. I've never seen a dvd player tear through a dvd like that. WOW!

  • masta says:

wow, I had to send my crashbox back two times to get it fixed, I have 3 other friends out of which 2 had to send theirs back…. so that is what.. a 75% crash rate, going by my friends alone.

It's good somebody is sticking it to MS, they've been sticking consumers for way to long.

  • Da Man says:

Listen, Th Eu has every right to get M$ to respond as unlike other parts of the world, Europe are trying to stop large companies from setting items to customers that is not fit for use. I've never seen my DVD, CD or Car CD/DVD scratch my disks. So why should M$ get away with selling faulty game consoles. And yes, they are faulty if they scratch disks as there should not be any contact of the disk except from the spinel. The EU are simply trying to protect the end user who are you and me.

boy am I glad the ps3 is rock solid.

I'd be scared if there was a folding program on the 360. It would probably burn down the house while at work.

    haha
